Danielle Jonas is sharing her private health struggle.
The 39-year-old wife of Jonas Brothers heartthrob Kevin Jonas revealed that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, opening up about the emotional impact it had on her and how it knocked her self-confidence.
During an open interview with Parents on October 9, Danielle said her fight for good health started when she began experiencing strange hair loss. At first, the doctors wrote off her worries as anxiety, but subsequent tests revealed the true reason. “They tried to tell me that I had anxiety,” Danielle stated. “Finally, I had a biopsy that revealed I actually had Lyme disease.”. I also had scalp eczema, probably due to the inflammation from Lyme disease. The hair loss was traumatic. I reached a point that I wanted to wear a wig.
The 16-year wife of Kevin Jonas, Danielle, conceded that the apparent symptoms caused her to feel self-conscious, particularly when she needed to go out in public with her husband. “I had to go out and do things with Kevin,” she said. “I just wanted to feel like myself.”
Though she didn’t reveal the exact timeline of her diagnosis, Danielle confirmed that her symptoms are currently under control. Lyme disease, a bacterial infection commonly transmitted through tick bites, can cause a range of symptoms including fatigue, joint pain, and inflammation.
For the Married to Jonas alum, dealing with the illness has also influenced the way she speaks to her daughters, Alena, 11, and Valentina, 8, particularly as they have their own skin ailments. “They saw everything that I went through,” Danielle added. “So the key thing I remind them [when their eczema gets worse] is ‘this is going to pass.'”
Parenting with a chronic illness hasn’t been simple, but Danielle has discovered methods to bond with her daughters – especially Alena, who has become interested in skincare. “Life with a tween with skin problems and a love for skincare has been kind of tricky,” she said. “I had to reel Alena back in a little. In addition to eczema, she’s always had other skin problems, so keeping her clean is key.”
Even though she has protective tendencies, Danielle desires her daughter to have fun with self-expression while being conscious of her skin. “She gets angry because she wants to have fun with some products,” Danielle explained. “I just say, ‘Well, do you want a flare-up or do you want to get it in control?’ That brings her down.”
Now healthier and more aware of her own health, Danielle is spreading the word about Lyme disease and listening to your gut when something ain’t right. Her experience is a reminder that invisible illnesses can have a serious emotional impact – and that self-advocacy is the solution.
By being honest, Danielle continues to exhibit the same strength and dignity that have endeared her to Jonas Brothers fans. Her honesty also brings to light the struggles that many women encounter when dealing with health problems balancing motherhood and public life.
