Mariah Carey doesn’t have birthdays, and she’s not joking about it.
The iconic singer, now 56, has long insisted she doesn’t celebrate her date of birth. Born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York, Mariah prefers to honor what she calls “anniversaries” rather than birthdays. When asked on Capital FM if she really doesn’t acknowledge the passing of time, she confirmed it flat-out: “That is true.”
It’s not just birthdays she avoids. Mariah also pays zero attention to clocks. When DJ Sian Welby asked if she avoids clocks too, Mariah replied, “Yeah. No, just let it go. I don’t have a birthday, no. Anniversaries, yes.”
If you’re trying to make plans with Mariah Carey, don’t expect her to set a time. She explained that she would have one of her team members reach out and coordinate with whoever she’s meeting. DJ Chris Stark asked how he’d know what time to meet her, and DJ Jordan North joked, “It’s on Mariah’s time.” Mariah agreed, saying, “Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”
This kind of carefree approach to time isn’t new for her. In a previous interview with Complex magazine, she joked that she wasn’t born in the traditional sense but was “just dropped here” in a “fairyland experience.”
Mariah Carey’s birthday denial is part of a bigger philosophy. Back in 2014, when she was 44, she told Out magazine, “Darling, I’m eternally 12 years old.” And she means it. She said she doesn’t count years and even “rebukes” them. Her take? Life is about celebrating, not aging.
When told she had been a pop star for 25 years, she responded, “First of all, don’t round up. If you’re going to round, round down!” She added, “I don’t count years, but I definitely rebuke them, I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling. Please put an LOL next to this, because people are going to be, like, WTF?”
Mariah Carey doesn’t have birthdays, she has a vibe. She lives in her own world where time is fluid, clocks are irrelevant, and age is just a concept. Whether it’s part of her diva persona or just how she chooses to live, it’s undeniably Mariah.
