Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott Returns For A Really Specific Reason In “Scream 7”

Neve Campbell is officially back in Scream 7 as Sidney Prescott, and there’s a very specific reason why.

After skipping out on Scream VI due to a public salary dispute, the iconic scream queen is set to make her return, and according to screenwriter Guy Busick, there’s more to it than just nostalgia. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Busick revealed that the new film had to be a Sidney movie-and the reason is tightly connected to what Scream as a franchise is all about.

“I don’t want to give anything away,” Busick said, “but there’s a really cool reason. In all these movies, you have to ask, ‘Why now? What is the thing Scream is commenting on now?’” That’s always been part of the meta-horror DNA of the franchise-commenting on the state of horror, and especially horror franchises.

Busick explained that the idea for bringing Sidney back came from him and co-writer James Vanderbilt, who also worked on Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Once they had their new story, they first pitched it to franchise legend Kevin Williamson. From there, it was taken to Campbell-and she was immediately on board.

“We went to Neve Campbell and said, ‘This is why. This is why Sidney now,’” Busick shared. “Neve was like, ‘Oh, I get that.’”

Alongside Campbell, Scream 7 will see the return of other familiar faces, including Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers, David Arquette’s Dewey Riley, Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher, and even Scott Foley’s Roman Bridger. That’s a big reunion of legacy characters, hinting at a major shake-up in the narrative.

What’s interesting is that Scream 7 wasn’t originally supposed to be this kind of movie at all. The initial plan was to focus on the “Core Four”: Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown) and sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter (Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera). However, those plans unraveled after both Ortega and Barrera left the project-the latter fired over comments regarding the war in Gaza.

“We had to start from scratch,” Busick admitted. “It was a bummer. We were excited about what we had for that movie.”

But the change in direction opened the door for Sidney’s return in a way that now feels essential. “We always wanted to do a Sidney movie,” Busick said. “And so it was like, ‘All right, let’s get into it. Why now, and why this one?’”

Fans can expect a very deliberate and relevant story that taps into what made the franchise resonate in the first place-and why Sidney Prescott still matters.

Sidney Prescott returns in Scream 7-and it sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait.
