It’s widely reported by fans of Nicole Kidman that her relationship with Tom Cruise was stifling.
For instance, there’s a famous picture of the “Babygirl” actress looking incredibly relieved minutes after signing her divorce papers from the “Mission Impossible” actor. Yet according to “The Perfect Couple” actress, that photo was actually taken while shooting a movie and had nothing to do with her real life divorce. Instead, Kidman insists her relationship with Tom Cruise was “perfect.”
The pair met in 1990 while shooting “Days of Thunder,” yet the couple is best known for their acting chops in Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut.” And according to Nicole Kidman, the rumors of their marriage being difficult and constraining are far from true.
When asked by The New York Times in 2020 if she had a negative experience filming “Eyes Wide Shut” with her then-husband, she was quick to shut those whispers down once and for all.
“That fits the narrative that people came up with, but I definitely didn’t see it like that,” Kidman stressed. “We were happily married through that. We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say… Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”
Nicole Kidman Didn’t Want To Get Married Before Meeting Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman had big plans in the entertainment industry before she met Tom Cruise. According to the “Babygirl” star, she never saw marriage in her future until the moment she laid eyes on him. “I was never going to get married. Never,” she told Vanity Fair. “But he was just the most incredible, unusual man I’d ever met.”
“He basically swept me off my feet,” the Aussie-born actress revealed, recalling their origin story. “I fell madly, passionately in love. And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life – I was like, ‘Forget it. This is it.’”
She continued, saying she was willing to give up all her life plans to be Tom Cruise’s wife and have kids with him. “I was consumed by it, willingly,” she said. “And I was desperate to have a baby with him. I didn’t care if we were married.”

Nicole Kidman says her marriage to Tom Cruise was especially idyllic due to the effort they both put into their romance throughout their 11 years as a couple. “I think in a relationship, you have to work at keeping your partner in love with you,” she revealed. “You can’t just take it for granted…And I knew that was something he wouldn’t take for granted. That’s something that he is amazingly creative about. He’s amazingly romantic. He puts so much work into us.”
But much to Nicole Kidman’s heartache and despair, she says Tom Cruise asked her for a divorce after over a decade together. “Our life together was perfect,” she revealed. “It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system. That was a great relationship. I think it ran its course. I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me.”
Fortunately, Nicole Kidman is now thriving more-so than ever before. She’s currently married to her longtime partner Keith Urban, whom she’s been with since 2006.
