James Gunn has finally addressed the speculation swirling around The Batman: Part II, saying the movie is still alive and on track, and that he’s expecting the script from director Matt Reeves sometime this month.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said, “Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it. So we can’t wait to read the scripts, but we haven’t read it yet, if that’s your question.”
There’s been a cloud of rumors lately about the sequel being in trouble, especially after its release date was pushed back from 2026 to October 2027. Gunn, clearly tired of the chatter, didn’t hold back when defending Reeves. “People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is,” he said.
“He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
Gunn admitted he’s been “irritated” by fans constantly pushing for updates. “It’s just that thing people don’t need to be entitled about. It’s going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay,” he said. “And Matt’s not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.”
As for who’s returning in The Batman: Part II, Gunn confirmed all the key players are back: Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon. No plot details yet, but the core cast remains locked in.
Meanwhile, DC is expanding its universe with a Clayface spin-off movie, set to arrive in September 2026. This one’s not tied to The Batman universe, but will instead exist in the mainline DCU. Clayface will star Tom Rhys Harries and be directed by James Watkins, with a script by horror expert Mike Flanagan.
Gunn shared how the project came to be: “Mike Flanagan is somebody who I’ve been friendly with for a long time, and he wrote me about Clayface. Just being honest, I did not think that was something that was going to happen. But he came in and he pitched the idea and I was like, ‘Oh s***! That’s cool.’”
He added, “It’s a body horror movie. It’s a horror movie that, like any cool body horror movie, just happens to be in the DCU. And the script was fantastic. We didn’t plan to do Clayface, that was really something he brought to us.”
So while Reeves finishes the script for The Batman: Part II, DC fans can also look forward to something very different in Clayface, a horror-driven twist on the superhero genre.
