Rebel Wilson Eyes More Action Comedy Roles After “Bride Hard”

Rebel Wilson wants in on the action, comedy, that is.

After starring in her latest film Bride Hard, the Australian actress is setting her sights on more roles that blend high-energy stunts with big laughs. Speaking at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere on June 18, the 45-year-old shared her hope to keep the momentum going in the action-comedy space, even if she’s not gearing up for the John Wick franchise.

“Obviously I’m not a serious action person,” Rebel told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not going to be in the John Wick franchise, but I feel like action comedy, maybe there’s a few roles coming up in that space which would be really fun.”

In Bride Hard, Rebel plays Sam, a secret agent whose childhood best friend Betsy’s wedding is derailed by an armed mercenary attack. The best friend is played by her real-life friend and Pitch Perfect co-star, Anna Camp. Rebel said the opportunity to reunite with Camp was a major draw.

“I love Anna,” she said. “I think she’s one of the world’s best actresses, she can do anything. This movie required a girl squad, so I was like, ‘Yeah, bring in Anna Camp.’ She could’ve played any role, but she chose the bride, and once again we play besties.”

Director Simon West said the choice to cast Camp was a no-brainer. “It was just easy because they’re friends,” he explained. “There’s so much going on in the film. You think, ‘How can we make that relationship work the best?’ And getting somebody like Anna who already knows Rebel’s timing, it just makes it so obvious.”

For Rebel, Bride Hard was more than just fun and games. She dove into five weeks of physical training to prep for the intense fight scenes. “I trained for a full five weeks and did conditioning for it,” she told People. “I had to be really kind of in beast mode. But I enjoyed it, getting paid to be fit, which is really good.”

However, the production wasn’t without its hazards. Rebel recalled a serious on-set accident during a fight scene. “A gun accidentally got whacked across my face,” she told Access Hollywood. “My nose got split open, it was just a freak accident. They had to get a plastic surgeon in. If they didn’t, I would’ve been permanently disfigured.”

Despite the scare, Rebel’s injury healed without lasting damage, and she’s walking away from Bride Hard even more excited about action comedy than before. While she may not be doing Keanu Reeves-level stunts, there’s no doubt she’s ready to punch her way into more roles with heart and humor.
