Sabrina Carpenter Finally Explains “Manchild” Lyrics

Sabrina Carpenter is setting the record straight about her fiery new single, and fans are living for it.

After tons of speculation about who “Manchild” is really about, the singer has finally shared what inspired the lyrics, and spoiler alert, it’s not just shade at an ex. Sabrina Carpenter’s Manchild inspiration has been a hot topic since the track dropped, and now the Grammy winner is giving fans a peek behind the curtain.

On June 5, the 25-year-old pop star took to Instagram with a heartfelt caption that explained how Manchild was born “on a random Tuesday” alongside songwriters Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff. Sabrina had just wrapped up her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, and this track wasn’t even originally part of it. But clearly, it hit different. “It ended up being the best random Tuesday of my life,” she wrote.

The track, now available on streaming platforms, is already being called one of her sassiest songs ever, and fans can’t stop dissecting the lyrics. With verses like “Manchild, why do you always come a-running’ to me? / F— my life, won’t you let an innocent woman be?” and “Half your brain just ain’t there”, you can see why everyone’s assuming it’s a diss track.

Sabrina doesn’t name names, but fans are convinced this one’s aimed at her ex, Barry Keoghan. The pair were first linked in December 2023, spotted having dinner in Los Angeles, and kept things low-key until they starred together in her “Please Please Please” video. The chemistry was undeniable, but by December 2024, sources confirmed they’d taken a break. According to PEOPLE, it wasn’t drama, just two young stars choosing career over commitment for now.

And let’s not forget, Sabrina also had fans buzzing about a potential fling with Shawn Mendes back in 2023. The rumors got so loud she had to clear things up, insisting they were “not dating” despite being seen together multiple times in LA.

But back to Manchild, because even if it’s not officially about Barry (or Shawn), it’s clearly inspired by the messy, confusing rollercoaster of early adult relationships. In her Instagram caption, Sabrina called the song “a loving eye roll” and said it’s her anthem for the “confusing and fun young adult years of life.” She added that it’s the kind of track that makes you want to stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long.

Honestly? Mission accomplished.

Between cheeky behind-the-scenes photos from the music video and that iconic “thank you men for testing me!! 🐷🤍” sign-off, Sabrina’s fans were quick to hype her up. “Sabrina be writing better diss tracks than rappers lmao 😭😭,” one fan commented, and the vibe couldn’t be more accurate.

The Manchild music video drops on June 6 on YouTube, and if the song’s already got this much attention, the visuals are bound to break the internet. The upbeat melody paired with brutally honest lyrics is classic Sabrina Carpenter, balancing her sweet pop princess image with just enough venom to keep everyone guessing.

So is Manchild really about an ex? Maybe. But at the end of the day, the Manchild inspiration seems bigger than one guy. It’s about those frustrating, ridiculous, head-scratching dating experiences that almost every 20-something can relate to. And that’s exactly why fans can’t stop blasting it on repeat.

Catch the Manchild music video premiere on June 6 and stay tuned, because Sabrina is clearly just getting started with this new era.
