Sarah Jessica Parker Finally Addresses Big Problem on “And Just Like That”

While most viewers don’t take And Just Like That very seriously since it will never measure up to the magic of Sex and the City.

Yet, there are some glaring issues within the reboot, that have genuinely infuriated fans. Particularly, relating to the handling of Mr. Big’s sudden death. While there isn’t exactly a sizable Mr. Big fanbase, (most viewers can’t stand him), fans were still super invested in Carrie’s on-again off-again relationship with her Sex and the City love interest. Sure, it was messy, but that’s what kept it entertaining. And when the two finally got together in the series finale of the original show, it felt like all that hard work Carrie had to endure to win over Big, had finally paid off.

The pair were married for nearly two decades right before Big’s unexpected demise on And Just Like That. Although it was a tragic situation, some fans were excited to see Carrie Bradshaw single again, since her messy dating life is in part what made the original series so fun. But it didn’t take long for her to wind up safe inside the arms of her former love, Aidan Shaw.

It was heartwarming witnessing Carrie and Aidan’s reunion in season 2 of And Just Like That, since after all that time apart, there was still so much love between them. But what upset fans greatly about her rekindled romance with Aidan, was Carrie’s audacity to refer to her marriage to Big as “a mistake.”

Carrie Bradshaw Said She Made a Mistake Choosing Big Over Aidan in And Just Like That

Fans audibly gasped during season 2 of And Just Like That, when Carrie gave a bombshell revelation about her romantic trajectory. When Che asked Carrie why it never worked out between Aidan and her in the past, Carrie responded by saying that she “made a mistake.” Judging by this statement, we’re led to believe she regretted her nearly two decades of marriage to Mr. Big. This feels like a slap in the face for fans of Sex and the City, who struggled with Carrie during her roller-coaster attempt to win over Mr. Big. Really, Carrie? All that turmoil you put us viewers through, for it to then be labeled as one big mistake?

“Carrie calling her relationship with Big a mistake really feels like a betrayal of her character and 25 years of storytelling,” one commenter wrote on the And Just Like That Subreddit. “Carrie wouldn’t regret the love she shared with Big or the 15 years of marriage (that we were explicitly told during season 1 were happy and great years). Carrie of the show knew Aidan wasn’t right for her after the second break up. I’m convinced this ‘Carrie’ is some sort of imposter,” the commenter observed.

Sarah Jessica Parker Finally Addresses Big

Sarah Jessica Parker Mr. Big

Mr. Big was a prominent character throughout Sex and the City’s run. Even when he wasn’t there, the ghost of his presence seemed to loom over Carrie at every turn. This was especially so throughout her relationship with Aidan in the original series, and it was because of her love for Mr. Big, that she ultimately ended it with Aidan for good.

With all this weighted history in mind, it seems strange that the writers of And Just Like That would just casually drop this bombshell that Carrie considers Big a “mistake,” dismissing Carrie’s deep attachment to John Preston throughout the entirety of Sex and the City.

Sarah Jessica Parker is finally acknowledging the impact Big had on the show, and the impact of his character’s passing. “Big dying was really, really hard to do both professionally and personally,” Parker recently told E!. “That’s not just a thread. It’s one of the main arteries that you would struggle to do without.”

She continued, saying of Carrie and Big’s story, “It was really sad to say goodbye to that.” Parker added, “That was a hugely wonderful story to tell for a lot of years.”

Chris Noth was cut from the series finale following numerous allegations of sexual assault.
