Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t saying no to fans, but she is saying no to selfies.
The “Sex and the City” actress recently explained why she’s changed the way she interacts with the public, especially when she’s out and about, like at the airport.
During a guest appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Parker opened up about a recent interaction that perfectly summed up her new approach. While walking through an airport, a woman approached her and asked, “Can I take your picture?” without even saying hello.
That didn’t sit right with the 60-year-old star. “We didn’t even meet,” she recalled telling the fan. “You didn’t even introduce yourself. What’s your name?” After the woman said her name was Julie, Parker suggested they have a conversation instead of snapping a selfie.
“I guarantee you it’s gonna be so much more meaningful,” she told her. Later on, once her own family was settled and eating, she even went back to continue chatting with Julie.
Howard Stern commented that her approach sounded like a “schoolteacher teaching everyone how to behave,” and said it must get annoying. But Parker disagreed.
“Here’s the thing,” she explained. “I kind of prefer it to somebody walking up to me with a camera already ready, asking as they’re clicking. I always am, like, startled by it.”
She said she’d much rather someone just talk to her like a real person. “I prefer for someone to come up to me and say, ‘Maybe this isn’t your best time, my name is Veronica and I’m excited to see you.’ That feels better. It’s about a human connection.”
It’s a shift in how celebrities and fans interact in an era when everything feels instant and performative. Parker’s hoping to bring things back to something a little more real.
Beyond selfies and social interactions, Parker also spoke recently about being labeled a “style icon.” Despite the public’s obsession with her fashion sense, she says she’s always dressed for herself.
Speaking to HELLO! magazine in the UK, she said, “It’s flattering, but it’s something I don’t really think about.”
She continued, “I do love clothes and fashion, but I don’t go out to be anything other than myself. There’s a time when you’re young when you think a lot about people’s opinions of you. But I’d be at a disadvantage to spend time worrying about what others think of me now, good or bad.”
Her attitude, both in fashion and in public life, comes down to one thing: authenticity. Whether it’s dodging selfies or dressing for herself, Sarah Jessica Parker is staying true to who she is, no filters, no facades.
