Scooter Braun is looking back on his journey with Justin Bieber and he’s got no regrets.
The 43-year-old music executive, who famously discovered Bieber in 2008, opened up on The Diary of a CEO podcast about how proud he is of what they built together, despite going their separate ways professionally in 2023.
“They put it on the line for me, too,” Braun said, speaking about Bieber and his family. “They believed in a 25-year-old kid. We were able to achieve some amazing things and I’m very proud of what we achieved and always rooting for him.”
For over a decade, Braun played a major role in Bieber’s career, helping him become one of the biggest global pop stars. But that chapter came to a close last year, and Braun admits he saw it coming for a while.
“The writing was on the wall,” he said. “At that point it had been a couple years where I knew I wanted to do something else, and I wanted to find out who I was.”
Still, there’s no bad blood. In fact, Braun says he understands exactly why Bieber wanted to take the reins of his career and prove himself independently.
“I think there comes a point where, I understand, he probably wants to go on and show that he can do it,” Braun explained. “We worked together for so long and we had such extreme success. I think you get to a point as a man where you want to show the world, you can do it on your own. I completely respect that.”
Braun’s respect for Bieber is clear, and he says they had enough honest conversations that the split wasn’t a shock. Even as their business ties ended, Braun says he kept cheering Bieber on from the sidelines.
After stepping away from managing Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Demi Lovato, Braun officially announced his retirement from music management in 2024.
In his statement, he said: “I have been blessed to have had a Forrest Gump-like life while witnessing and taking part in the journeys of some of the most extraordinarily talented people the world has ever seen. I’m constantly pinching myself and asking, ‘How did I get here?’ And after 23 years this chapter as a music manager has come to an end.”
Now entering a new phase of his life and career, Braun seems at peace with where he’s been, and what’s next. As for Bieber, all signs point to him continuing his journey with the same drive he had when he first went viral as a teenager.
And if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that Scooter Braun is still cheering from the sidelines.
