Simon Cowell is opening up about how his life changed when he became a dad.
The 65-year-old music mogul, known for hit shows like The X Factor and America’s Got Talent, says his son Eric gave him a renewed sense of purpose after a tough personal loss.
Cowell welcomed Eric in 2013 with his partner Lauren Silverman. The couple’s only child arrived years after Simon lost both of his parents, his father, Eric, in 1999, and his mother, Julie, in 2005. Speaking to People magazine, Simon admitted that becoming a father helped him heal.
“I loved my parents so much, and once they left, I was kind of lost for a while,” he said. “Eric saved me because that love comes back 100 times more powerful. It’s extraordinary, and it never goes.”
Simon Cowell’s bond with his son goes beyond just parenting, they share similar tastes too. Eric, now 11, has taken a liking to the kinds of talent shows his dad is famous for.
“Fortunately, like me, Eric loves these kinds of shows,” Simon said. “He’s more shy than me, but that could change. I think he’d be a really good producer. I would love that. I mean, that would be my dream.”
As America’s Got Talent kicked off its milestone 20th season on NBC, Simon reflected on the longevity of the franchise and even hinted that Eric might one day be part of its future.
“I’m now looking at the next 20 years of this show and wondering where it goes next,” he shared. “I really do have this feeling that whether it’s me or whether it’s Eric, you’re going to be having this conversation with us in 20 years’ time, because I can’t imagine this show not being on.”
Simon has been a judge on America’s Got Talent since 2016 and remains one of its most recognizable faces. But clearly, his vision is growing beyond just his own role. He’s looking ahead to a possible legacy that includes Eric stepping into the industry, maybe not as a judge, but perhaps behind the scenes.
Despite the often tough exterior Simon is known for on-screen, his comments reveal a softer, deeply emotional side. Losing both his parents left a gap in his life, one that Eric has helped fill in a powerful way.
Cowell’s story is a reminder that even the most successful public figures face personal challenges, and that love and family can be the most grounding force of all.
And if Simon Cowell has his way, the name Cowell might be attached to the future of television for decades to come.
