Theo Von’s Netflix Special Taping in New York Sparks Intense Backlash Among Fans

Podcast personality and comedian Theo Von is under a ton of heat after his taping of a stand-up special for Netflix in New York City let down many of his fans.

The show, which was held at the Beacon Theatre, soon fueled a tide of negative posts on social media, with some attendees claiming he “bombed” and calling the show “hard to watch.”

Ben Koo, a writer for Awful Announcing, highlighted the backlash by quoting fan feedback on X. “Theo Von was filming a Netflix special tonight and reportedly just completely bombed,” he wrote, before boiling down a string of scathing first-hand reports from fans.

A few fans who attended the taping reported that Von seemed unprepared and unstructured. One attendee commented that he was “repeating bits over and over again” as if he was rehearsing in front of the cameras, which broke the vibe in the theater. They reported that lots of people left during the performance, including themselves.

Another guest added voice to the sentiment, commenting, “I love @TheoVon but last nights show was tough. Hope he’s alright.” Others claimed Von forgot his punchlines and used excuses during the performance, which only made the tension worse.

Videos on X also caught Von conceding onstage that he was having a “long month,” suggesting potential personal struggles. Some fans attributed the jagged delivery to being nervous, with one fan remembering a previous show in which Von seemed similarly flustered and sometimes forgot punchlines.

Not every reaction was negative. Some in attendance challenged the assertion that a third of the crowd departed early, saying the numbers were inflated. Others came to Von’s defense online, dismissing criticism there as suggesting the worst criticism came on Reddit, where, as one fan of his said, “They’re all the punchlines in his jokes.”

Nevertheless, even some of the taping’s defenders confessed the taping was disappointing. “I saw him Oceanside and it was comparable,” one posted. “Began strong first 20 mins but it was a slide from then on. Had to leave early because it was too difficult to see. Love Theo, but it was tough. His headliners were superb though.”

In spite of the criticism, Von is still a show favorite among comedians and podcasters, whose off-color sense of humor and storytelling abilities make him a darling. Whether this shoddy taping affects his next Netflix special remains to be seen, but currently, fan accounts further perpetuate a picture of an uneven set that left the audience at odds.
