Timothée Chalamet is smashing expectations again, this time, with a paddle in hand, for ‘Marty Supreme’.
In the upcoming film Marty Supreme, the Dune star takes on the role of a ping pong champion entangled in a passionate affair with an older woman, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. But Chalamet didn’t just act the part, he trained like an actual pro for months to pull off the scenes convincingly.
According to the film’s cinematographer Darius Khondji, the preparation was no joke. “You can do anything, any camera tricks you want, but you need to have a core to play ping pong,” Khondji told Variety. “He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting.”
Chalamet didn’t just practice against assistants, he filmed scenes with real world-class athletes. Khondji said, “He was surrounded by some of the greatest real ping pong champions playing today.”
As for the movie itself? Khondji insists it’s “about everything but ping pong.”
Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is rumored to be loosely based on the life of a real professional player. But it’s the intense romance between Chalamet’s character and Paltrow’s that has fans buzzing.
Paltrow recently stirred up headlines when she told Vanity Fair: “We have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot, a lot.”
She described her character as a woman married into the “ping pong mafia” who falls into a complicated relationship with Chalamet’s Marty. “He breathes life back into her,” she said, “but it’s kind of transactional for them both.”
This film also marks Paltrow’s return to the big screen after years focusing on her wellness brand, Goop. While she’s previously claimed to be done with acting, the intimacy of Marty Supreme clearly pulled her back in.
Paltrow also talked about working with an intimacy coordinator for the first time, calling it a totally new experience. “I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on,” she joked.
As for Chalamet, her praise was just as intense. “He’s such a thinking man’s sex symbol,” she said. “He’s a very polite, properly raised man who takes his work seriously and is a fun partner.”
Marty Supreme doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
