The students and the Greendale Community College cast are no strangers to drama. Yet as it turns out things behind the scenes were just as chaotic, if not more so, than what unfolds on screen.
Community is a cult classic NBC comedy, best known for its meta-humor, pop culture references, and unique relationship dynamics within the core study group.
While Dan Harmon’s series tends to adhere to an overall cheery and upbeat tone, things behind the scenes were often anything but. Here’s all the drama that unfolded on the set of Community amongst the castmates as well as within the writer’s room.
Chevy Chase Was Reportedly Difficult To Work With
Chevy Chase, who plays Pierce on Community, was reportedly a nightmare to work with throughout his time on the NBC hit sitcom. According to Donald Glover and series creator Dan Harmon, the SNL alum would frequently make racist remarks at the expense of Glover.
After Chase left Community, he would go on to speak of his time on the series in an unmistakably negative light. Not only did he call his time on Dan Harmon’s TV show a “huge mistake” but he also claimed it wasn’t funny enough for him, and even refused to do scenes that he didn’t find humorous. To top it all off, he didn’t like the fact that Pierce was morphing into a “caricature”, and felt villainized from the rest of the group. Speaking of his time on Community during Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, Chase said, “I just felt that it was… I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.”
Dan Harmon Admits He Was a Nightmare To Work With
It’s common for fans to hear of drama amongst cast mates during the shooting process of a TV show, but it’s less common to hear about the tensions brewing amongst the series creator and BTS staff. In the case of Community, there was a whole lot of toxic behavior going on behind the camera as well, which the creative force behind Community wholly admits to.
It’s a rare case where the creator of a TV series gets fired from his own show, yet Dan Harmon miraculously managed to do so. “I would have fired me,” Dan Harmon admitted in 2012, recalling his “self-destructive” behavior.
Community Creator Admits He ‘Ruined’ His Show Following Sexual Harassment of Writer
Not only did series creator Dan Harmon fail to get along with members of the cast, crew, and the head of NBC himself, but he also admits to sexually harassing one of his female employees, Megan Ganz, who served as a writer throughout the majority of Community’s run. According to Harmon, he developed a rather obsessive crush on Ganz, yet used his power and status to bully her the moment he learned she didn’t reciprocate his feelings.
“Now I wanted to teach her a lesson,” said Harmon of his experience with Ganz after she rejected his romantic advances. “I wanted to show her that if she didn’t like being liked in that way, then, oh boy, she should get over herself. After all, if you’re just gonna be a writer, then this is how “just writers” get treated.”
He continued, explaining, “I crushed on her and resented her for not reciprocating it, and the entire time I was the one writing her paychecks and in control of whether she stayed or went and whether she felt good about herself or not, and said horrible things. Just treated her cruelly, pointedly. Things that I would never, ever, ever have done if she had been male and if I had never had those feelings for her.”
