Ever since that shocking finale of Sirens came out, fans of the Netflix show have been begging for a season 2 of the limited series.
Considering all the major twists and turns in the “Sirens” finale, it would make sense viewers would want to explore the consequences of Simone and Devon’s choices in a potential season 2. What will happen when Simone realizes dating Peter is a nightmare in itself? How will Devon get by in her decrepit Buffalo home, while her father’s health issues continue to get worse? Where will Michaela go, now that her entire life has been stolen from her? So many questions left unanswered, that can be explored in a second season.
Yet despite being just as curious about what will become of these characters as everyone else, I will be greatly disappointed if Netflix were to release a second season. Here’s why.
Will There Be A Second Season of Netflix’s Sirens?
First, let’s unpack whether there’s a chance of a second season of the psychological thriller in the first place. While there’s no definite information yet as to whether the show will continue after the five-episode long miniseries, actress Meghann Fahy (aka Devon) has expressed deep interest in returning for a second time around.
She said while speaking to Variety, “It ends in a very natural way, but I can imagine what the characters’ worlds become.” Fahy continued, discussing the hope of a second season. “I, for one, would love to know what happens to Michaela, where she goes. So I think it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. We didn’t talk about it on set, but I would love to do more.”
Why There Shouldn’t Be a Second Season of Sirens
Look. I adored this series just as much as everyone else. I thought it was a powerful, nuanced take on how we fight tooth and nail to escape the confines of our past. I also praise the limited series for encouraging audiences to think twice before judging a woman’s “siren-like” choices. There is often so much more to the story than meets the eye.
Yet despite being obsessed with this series, (hey, hey,) I think it’s so much more powerful to leave it as it is. There’s way more depth in leaving it open-ended, since it forces audiences to really think, and come to their own conclusions.
To further my point, it’s almost never a good idea to add a second season to a series that’s already so perfectly wrapped up. Sometimes, adding an additional set of episodes can even make or break a show. For instance, Squid Game and Big Little Lies ended so exceptionally in season 1, that the second seasons to the respective shows could never measure up to the first season. Both felt more like cash grabs than a genuine desire to further the narrative as a work of art. With Sirens, as much as I’d love to see more, I think something that ends so exquisitely deserves to be left alone, and not have a season 2.
