One of the many reasons Sex and the City was so beloved during its original run was due to Carrie Bradshaw’s philosophical narrations throughout the series.
In every episode of SATC, Carrie would ponder over her social dilemmas, posing genuinely thoughtful questions via voiceover. This narration tied seamlessly with the storyline because Carrie would essentially voice over her written assignments for her column as she typed.
It was an essential element infused in Sex and the City, because it gave viewers insight into what Carrie was thinking. Furthermore, it helped create a sense of intimacy with audiences and Carrie, since her narrations often revealed her innermost thoughts and secrets. Removing this important framing device on And Just Like That swipes away much of the magic from the original series. It feels almost as though we’ve lost that connection with Carrie that sacredly tied us to her in Sex and the City.
Fortunately, Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker have spilled the news to longtime fans that they’ll be reviving Carrie Bradshaw’s narrations for season 3 of And Just Like That! Here’s all the scoop we know so far.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Least Favorite Scenes To Shoot in Sex and The City Were The Narrations
According to the tell-all book, Sex and the City & Us, Sarah Jessica Parker’s least favorite scenes to shoot were the iconic “I couldn’t help but wonder” narrations. Since these voiceovers were recorded in solitude, SJP found it to be an extremely isolating experience that left her feeling lonely. As a natural-born extrovert, Parker had a difficult time adjusting to those quieter moments spent by herself in a recording studio. The actress grew up in a huge family as one of 7 siblings, so during her formative up, she never even brushed her teeth alone.
But despite SJP not being a fan of recording these scenes, she’s willing to take one for the team in order to improve the reboot series as a whole.
Michael Patrick King Dishes On ‘I Couldn’t Help But Wonder’ Monologues Returning to And Just Like That
I couldn’t help but wonder… when will we get to see Carrie Bradshaw’s inner monologues again? Fortunately, showrunner Michael Patrick King has revealed they’re bringing this beloved framing device back in a significant way.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, King gave us all the scoop. He dished, “Carrie’s actually writing a new book and the voiceover is the way into the book. When we did voiceover on Sex in the City, Carrie had this overview of everything. She was telling you what to think and what to feel. For the first two seasons of And Just Like That, I took the voiceover away because I didn’t think she knew what she was feeling.”
King continued, saying, “She’s starting to feel things again and have an overview of where she is in the world. Writing a book is very private, and so, in an interesting way, it’s almost a direct, intimate conversation with the viewer. Maybe there are things she’s saying to the viewer that she wouldn’t say to even her best friends.”
