Walmart’s Checkout Policy Is Driving Shoppers Crazy—Here’s Why

If you’ve been to Walmart recently, you’ve probably noticed something: checkout lines are a disaster. Whether it’s self-checkout drama, short staffing, or locked-up products, frustrated shoppers are venting their anger online—and Walmart is scrambling to respond.

What’s Going On?

A recent viral post on X (formerly Twitter) showed a customer waiting over 10 minutes, only to be forced into self-checkout, even though there were empty cashier lanes.

“Walmart Store #3583 closing all lines while people standing waiting over 10 minutes to send everyone to Self-checkout…”

The post included photos of packed self-checkout lines, while traditional checkout lanes sat closed and empty. Walmart’s official account quickly responded, asking the user to DM them with details, but no follow-up was posted.

Why Are Customers So Mad?

Walmart has been pushing self-checkout harder than ever, but customers aren’t loving it. The complaints fall into a few main categories:

  • No Cashiers Available – Many Walmart locations have few or no staffed registers after a certain time.
  • Self-Checkout Chaos – Shoppers with more than 15 items are forced into self-checkout, slowing down the process for everyone.
  • Locked-Up Products – Essentials like razors, baby formula, and electronics require an employee to unlock them.
  • Staffing Issues – Shoppers claim Walmart isn’t hiring enough workers, making in-store shopping more frustrating than ever.

Customers Are Boycotting Walmart?

One X user even warned people to “rethink” shopping at Walmart due to staffing issues. Another user, Kenn Rapp, posted an expletive-laden rant, saying:

“These m*****f****** really don’t want us to shop here. Everything’s f****** locked up!”

Walmart responded to Rapp’s post, saying they’d investigate the situation. But this isn’t just an isolated incident—complaints like this are piling up.

Is Walmart Going Too Far?

Some say Walmart is just adapting to shoplifting concerns with its checkout policy, with theft increasing in many stores. But others argue that locking up essentials and removing cashiers is making shopping more annoying.

Even the National Retail Federation—which previously claimed retail theft was costing billions—had to withdraw its report after some findings were disputed.

So, is Walmart really dealing with a crime problem, or are they just cutting labor costs at the expense of customer experience?

What’s Next?

While Walmart keeps telling customers to “DM for details,” people just want a better shopping experience. Some threaten to take their business elsewhere, while others just suck it up because of Walmart’s low prices.

One thing is clear: if checkout chaos continues, shoppers will keep calling Walmart’s policy out.

  1. Crazy how sometimes you have to get your own cart outside. Check out everything your self but then they have the nerve to ask for my receipt at door. If I have to do there job they don’t get to see my receipt. Hold receipt in air and keep walking. It’s all B.S……

  2. F*** retail shopping. Stores don’t wanna hire people, making it harder for people to find jobs, and the cost of living keeps getting more expensive each year. F*** Walmart and all these retail giants.

  3. Used to spend 400 tpp month. Now maybe 100 go to dollar and discount stores and factory outlets. Great better service cheaper and better products. Lost 25 year customer 3 friends same never go back you shot yourself in head trying to be cheap

  4. As of December 2024, the Walton family is the richest family in the world, while Elon Musk is not. The Waltons’ wealth comes from their stake in Walmart, the retail giant founded by Sam Walton.

  5. The whole world would be better off if it wasn’t human nature to rob and steal. Humans are basically lazy ! I believe humans were cursed with a defective brain. It feeds us with hate, jealousy, gluttony, lust, etc. that are not present in any other mammal. Human instincts like the mammals instincts is all that are needed but the defective brain which “thinks” it know better has been a major burden to human life !!!

  6. As a Walmart Plus Program Member I have had experiences of missing items but Walmart has always been quick to refund for the missing item/items. However, as mentioned in the comments it is up to ten days for the refund to post back to your method of payment. While I am not trying to defend Walmart because I recognize the bad experiences as I myself have had my share and sometimes have experienced much frustration. However, with recent refunds for missing or not delivered items on shipping, I have been given the option to refund my money to my Walmart Wallet and refunded funds were available within three hours. I Love This! 😊
I do feel undervalued as a Walmart Plus Program Member when I am offered a $5 Promo Code for missing items with no regards that I live 20 miles from the closest Walmart and $5 does not cover my gas much less my time to drive back to the store on Pickup Orders, and back home, or the time to wait for another delivery order with my busy schedule. On ane of my more recent delivery orders the shopper told me while he was shopping that there was absolutely No Bread in the Store, no items remotely close. I asked him, there’s no bread in the whole store and his response was, No, there is not. I called the Walmart which I ordered from and was told… Yes, there is bread. There was around 30- items the shopper claimed were not available.. which I doubted after the bread incident. So… I paid to have order delivered with 30 items not available although the order showed items available. Also, I paid to have my order within three hours and waited over 6 hours causing me to not be able to get to drugstore in time to pickup insulin for my daughter. That’s another compliment, insulin even over the counter insulin isn’t available for delivery even if you pay for delivery in under three hours.
I noticed comments saying Walmart has low prices but I disagree, prices are too high everywhere making it tough to even purchase food even when not on a limited income. PRICES NEED TO GO BACK DOWN!
    STIMULUS FUNDING, GONE!
    EXTRA FOOD BENEFITS, GONE!
AND, MANY OTHER COVID RELATED FUNDING, GONE!
OUTRAGEOUS COST OF LIFE SUSTAINING PRODUCTS ..LIKE FOOD, NOT GONE!
THERE WAS NO PREVISIONS TO REGULATE OUTRAGEOUS AND UNFAIR PRICING ON THE NECESSITIES LIKE FOOD BEFORE CUTTING LIFE SUSTAINING FUNDING.
S.S.A, AND S. S. I RECEIPENTS ARE NOT GIVEN ENOUGH TO EVEN FEED THEMSELVES I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE BECAUSE I HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS THAT I OFTEN HELP WHEN THEY CAN’T EVEN AFFORD TO FEED THEMSELVES! THESE PRICES HAVE TO DROP FOR NECESSITIES LIKE FOOD!

  7. All the products u have locked up will stay that way. I tried 4 over 10 minutes to get a cabinet opened for after shave. I can get on line for $2.00 less. Thanks for helping me save money. I don’t come to the store if there’s another source. I encourage others to do the same.
