Andre 3000 just gave fans the most unexpected gift, and no, it’s not a rap verse.
The OutKast legend made one of the wildest entrances at the 2025 Met Gala, walking the red carpet with a full piano strapped to his back. Hours later, he dropped a surprise EP titled 7 Piano Sketches, and it’s exactly what the name suggests, just Andre, a piano, and a whole lot of vibe.
The 49-year-old artist, known for always doing his own thing, made the announcement through Instagram after attending the star-studded event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. The EP, a follow-up to his 2023 project New Blue Sun, is a 16-minute collection of raw, minimalist piano recordings. And if you’re expecting lyrics or bars, don’t. Andre made it clear upfront: “Warning: no bars.”
He explained that these tracks are purely improvisational. He would move his fingers around the keys “randomly but with purpose” until he found something that felt right. He doesn’t know what keys or chords he’s hitting, and honestly, he doesn’t care. The goal was never perfection, it was expression. Influenced by greats like Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Philip Glass, and Joni Mitchell, Andre’s piano EP is more about emotional release than technical polish.
In fact, most of the tracks weren’t even recorded in a studio. Aside from the track Blueberries, the entire EP was made using his iPhone or laptop mic. “Pardon the sound quality,” he wrote. “These were personal, at-home recordings.” He even said they were often shared just with friends and family.
Andre also revealed the music was recorded almost 10 years ago, long before New Blue Sun. The project was originally titled The Best Worst Rap Album in History, a playful jab at the fact that there are literally no lyrics on it. But that’s what makes it “the best,” according to him. It’s the most emotionally free he’s ever felt, calling it a “palette cleanser.”
The piano EP was mostly recorded in Texas, in a house he shared with his son Seven, who he co-parents with Erykah Badu. That house didn’t have much, just beds, TV screens, and of course, a piano. It was there that 7 Piano Sketches came to life, raw and unfiltered.
From red carpets to bedroom recordings, Andre 3000 continues to prove that his artistry doesn’t follow trends, it makes them.
