Blake Shelton Says Post Malone Inspired His New Album ‘For Recreational Use Only’

Blake Shelton is back in the game with a brand-new album, and fans have Post Malone to partially thank for it.

The country star recently opened up about how working with the rapper-singer sparked something inside him again, leading to the creation of For Recreational Use Only, his first album in four years.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Blake didn’t hold back about the impact Post Malone had on him. “In some ways, Post Malone kind of got me, a fire lit under me,” he shared. Their collaboration on the upbeat track Somebody Pour Me a Drink played a big part in Blake’s return to the studio.

It’s clear that being around Post had a contagious effect. “You’ve been around him. I mean, you can’t be around that guy without having a good time,” Blake said. “He’s just so excited about everything. I was like, ‘Man, what am I doing? I need to make a record.’ Like, he had me fired up again from that song.”

Blake Shelton’s new album, For Recreational Use Only, dropped earlier this month and marks a fresh chapter for the 48-year-old singer after a bit of a creative pause. Though he stepped away from The Voice in 2022 after 12 years, Blake makes it clear that stepping away from music is a whole different story.

“Walking away from music, you might as well just poison me or something. That’s not something I can go without. I can’t help it,” he told People. His passion for music remains as strong as ever, and the new project shows that energy is far from fading.

His time on The Voice may be over, but that move was more about making space for music, not quitting it. “I’ve been wrestling with this for a while and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after season 23,” he said in a farewell statement. “This show has changed my life in every way for the better and it will always feel like home to me.”

Blake’s new album is packed with that signature laid-back vibe his fans love, but there’s also a fresh spark, likely thanks to that dose of inspiration from Post Malone. The unlikely duo may come from different music worlds, but their creative chemistry clearly works.

Whether it’s trading verses or sharing laughs in the studio, the connection between Shelton and Malone reminds us that great music often comes from unexpected places. And for Blake, it was exactly what he needed to reignite his love for recording and performing.
