Mariah Carey is officially back – and she’s not holding anything back either. Her latest single Type Dangerous is making waves, but it’s the upcoming music video that has fans buzzing.
Directed by longtime visual mastermind Joseph Kahn, the promo for Type Dangerous is set to drop Friday night – and it’s coming with what Kahn calls an “earth-shattering surprise.”
Kahn took to X (formerly Twitter) and told fans, “Cancel your booty calls Friday night, you’re going to be busy watching Type Dangerous.” And he didn’t stop there. He hyped the music video even more, writing: “There will be an earth shattering surprise in the @MariahCarey Type Dangerous video. I’m not kidding. Brace yourself lol … Unguessable, FYI.”
With a track record that includes iconic visuals for Taylor Swift, Eminem, and Britney Spears, Joseph Kahn knows how to build hype – and deliver. So when he says the surprise is “unguessable,” fans are paying attention.
Type Dangerous dropped just last week and is the first solo track from Mariah Carey in six years. That’s a big deal for Lambs, who’ve been waiting since her 2018 album Caution for new material. The new single features a slick sample from Eric B. and Rakim’s 1986 classic Eric B. Is President, giving it that old-school hip-hop flavor with Mimi’s signature vocals riding on top.
The single was first teased with a glam, vintage sports car-themed promo Mariah posted on social media. Since then, fans have been speculating like crazy about what this new era will bring – especially now that there’s a full album on the horizon. Carey confirmed the project is coming soon, stating: “I’ve been locked up in the studio for quite some time working my behind off on new music, and I’m thrilled for the unveiling of it to my fans, starting with Type Dangerous!”
Adding fuel to the fire, Anderson .Paak recently revealed he’s been in the studio with Mariah too. The 39-year-old singer/producer let the secret slip during an appearance on the music-guessing show Track Star. While repping a Mariah Carey T-shirt, he correctly named her 1996 hit Always Be My Baby and casually said, “We’re working on some music on her new album.”
So what’s the “earth-shattering” surprise in the Type Dangerous music video? Fans are throwing out guesses – a Beyoncé cameo, a secret album drop, or maybe even a return of her Honey-era persona. But Kahn insists no one will see it coming.
Whatever it is, Mariah Carey’s Type Dangerous music video is shaping up to be a must-watch event. If you’ve been waiting for her comeback moment, this is it. Tune in Friday night – and don’t say we didn’t warn you.
