After the success of his debut single ‘Sleepaway’ back in the Spring, which picked up a host of club floor & station airwave support, Spanish artist Veluzz returned with his new single – Tomorrow.
We caught up with Veluzz to speak to him about his new record, and learnt a bit about how music helped him overcome personal obstacles. Read our chat, below.
T.H.E – Hey Veluzz! Thanks for joining us here at The Music Essentials. How’s it going and what have you been up to since your last single ‘Sleepaway’?
Veluzz – Hello T.H.E – Music Essentials team. First of all, thank you for this opportunity. I just delivered to my distributor Symphonic, my latest production ‘Show You’ – which will be available on September 11th, along with a very cool video. I hope you like it as much as I do. It makes me dream, vibrate… I love it.
T.H.E – We’re loving your new record ‘Tomorrow’, tell us a bit about the song & the meaning behind it?
Veluzz – This production is based on a true story. A Colombian fan called Maria, gave me a “Veluzz” doll, made with her own hands and from there, little by little, the inspiration of the subject and video clip emerged. I had to show my gratitude and I hope I did so.
T.H.E – We’re aware of your back-story of overcoming personal obstacles, have you always been a person that’s pushed through challenges & do you also apply this to yourself as a recording artist?
Veluzz – My life went off in an instant, after a drunk driver, skipped a stop at high speed. When I woke up after a month in a coma, everything has been challenges and obstacles. To walk, to move my hand … but the music still makes me feel, now more than ever … the best emotion that a person can feel. The best feeling.
All this added to the loneliness.
T.H.E – Are there any other artists that have inspired you along the way?
Veluzz – Of course: my admiration for Kygo. I have had the occasion to personally thank him on several occasions for his help. In fact, my next production ‘Show You’ is published on September 11, dedicated to him, as a birthday gift. I told him a few days ago in Ibiza.
T.H.E – Talk us through a typical studio production process – after the initial song idea, how do you begin working on a track?
Veluzz – The initial idea is born on the piano. From there, an infinite battle of successes and errors comes up. Of sounds, volumes, bridges …
In the end, I have to abandon the project after months of obsessing over it, listening to it everywhere. And I really abandon it since I would never give it for ‘finished’; there is always something I could add or change.
T.H.E – Your artist name Veluzz is unique sounding. What does it signify?
Veluzz – Life. That light that after being in a coma for 30 days, announces that you come back to life. And I do not intend to waste the second opportunity. From here I mourn all those who were trapped in that state. My doctors thought that I would not wake up since the head injury I had was very serious.
But life, sometimes, pushes more than a medical diagnosis. My father was, is and still is the person who pushed me to come back to life. I love you Dad. Thanks for helping me. You are an example of a wonderful person. My personal God. Always.
T.H.E – What can we expect from you for the rest of 2018, release & production style-wise?
Veluzz – The new project ‘Believe’ in which I am currently working I think it is the one with the most tropical vibes of all. I love it and I think it’s the best or maybe the most complete production I’ve done so far. I hope to have it finished before the end of 2018.
T.H.E – And lastly, which five tracks should we add to our The Music Essentials playlist?
Veluzz – Difficult question… amongst all the tracks I love, right now I would choose:
Lullaby from Sigala
Do You Speak French from Calvin
Missed Call from Hogland
I Miss You from Clean Bandit
And Stargazing from Kygo, obviously!
