New Jersey-grown Shanghai Doom are making their return to Bassrush Records with a gritty dubstep destroyer, featuring Detroit’s Dêtre.

“Lightspeed” blurs the boundaries between rap and deep dubstep to illuminate a soul-rattling single. The track marks Shanghai Doom’s third outing with the label, following previous tracks “Wook Flu” with Xotix, and “Outsiders” alongside Runnit.

“Lightspeed” is an experimental anthem that’s destined to decimate sound systems. Riddled with hypnotic melodies and glitchy flourishes, the track conjures a dystopian subterranean soundscape. Dêtre takes the spotlight with raspy, whispered rap tones that are pitched down and bent for a filthy feel. The lyrics expand on the spacey core, deepening the thematic draw while adding an undeniable swagger. The bloodthirsty beat morphs from off-kilter hip-hop to a devastating dub that’s marred with trippy oscillations, scratchy textures, shuddering low-end, and razor-sharp percussion. From subtle samples to brain-bending sound design, Shanghai Doom showcases their ever-expanding sonic superiority through this heartracing heater.

Shanghai Doom reflects on the milestone release, saying, “‘Lightspeed’ marks the first time for us working with an original vocalist. It was a departure from our usual process but ended up going rather smoothly. We linked up with Dêtre for the vocals and, after only a few brief notes on direction, he was able to nail the vibe we were going for.”

Providing further insight into the writing process Dêtre, adds: “When I was approached about writing lyrics for the song, which was originally titled ‘Hyperspace,’ I knew I wanted to incorporate the word itself into the lyrics. This led me to a place where I was writing from a standpoint of moving so quickly through time and space that trivial things (i.e. social media) meant nothing. I also just wanted to match the overall dark tone of the tune as well, which came through in both the writing and processing of the vocals.”

Hailing from New Jersey, production duo Shanghai Doom have found their niche in the experimental bass space with a multitude of brain-busting left-field tunes. Their music has drawn support from some of the best-of-the-best within the bass music realm, including Liquid Stranger, Excision, Mr. Carmack, Zeds Dead, and LSDREAM. They have upcoming performances at Apocalypse Zombieland, and are gearing up for their co-headline ‘Death Mechanics’ Tour in conjunction with Abelation with 12 stops all across the US.

Detroit’s own Dêtre is a multi-threat delivering earth-shattering productions and brutish bars. His style merges bass-heavy tendencies with an underlying hip-hop edge for a killer signature sound. After making major waves in the underground, he can count top-tier artists like Liquid Stranger, Zeds Dead, and LSDREAM, as supporters of his work. Dêtre will be joining Shanghai Doom on their stop at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver from the aforementioned run of dates.

“Lightspeed” is a dark, thrilling, and heavy-hitting bass weapon that’s ready to destroy anything in its path.

Shanghai Doom’s new single “Lightspeed” ft. Dêtre is available on all platforms via Bassrush Records.
