Taylor Swift Anthem Explodes in Handmaid’s Tale Episode

Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version) just took center stage in The Handmaid’s Tale, and it has fans freaking out for all the right reasons.

The rerecorded version of her iconic revenge anthem blasted during the opening scene of the ninth episode, titled “Execution”, which is also the penultimate episode of the entire Hulu series. It wasn’t just a music cue. It was a moment.

In that scene, June, played by Elisabeth Moss, leads a group of handmaids in a massive coup against Gilead, the twisted, fascist regime that’s taken over America in the show’s dystopian world. As the resistance movement explodes into action, Swift’s song hits like a war drum. The lyrics mirror June’s emotions perfectly, rage, empowerment, and reckoning. It’s basically the soundtrack of her fight.

And here’s the kicker: this isn’t even the first time Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version) has shown up on screen. It was used briefly in the 2023 trailer for Amazon’s series Wilderness, but The Handmaid’s Tale used it extensively, making it a bold, cinematic choice.

Elisabeth Moss, who directed this episode and serves as executive producer, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she had been dying to use a Taylor Swift track for years. “I really want to find a place for a Taylor track in the last two episodes of the show,” she told her editor, Wendy Hallam Martin. And they found the absolute perfect one. Moss added, “Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally… and I think I can speak for Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast, who are all Swifties. It’s such an honor to be able to use her music.”

Editor Wendy Hallam Martin said she tried several songs for that moment but kept coming back to Swift. “Knowing how much Lizzie wanted a strong female voice and message, Taylor was the artist that delivered both lyrically and tonally,” she said. “June in this scene really was saying, ‘Look what you made me do,’ and the song couldn’t have been more on point.”

Naturally, this has sent Swifties into full speculation mode. Rumors are now swirling that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is finally coming, and Swift might drop the news at the American Music Awards next week. The rerecord would be the fifth of six expected Taylor Swift albums being redone from her old label deal with Big Machine Records. The only one left after that would be her 2006 debut. The whole re-recording saga started because of the massive dispute over her masters, but let’s be real, Taylor turned it into a flex.

Each Taylor’s Version release has done insane numbers. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) outperformed the original’s debut week and ranked as one of 2024’s best-selling albums. So if Reputation TV really is about to drop, it’s gonna be a cultural reset. Again.

The Handmaid’s Tale is now racing toward its final episode, which airs Tuesday, May 27. And closing out the show with a Taylor Swift power move? Iconic. Taylor’s music is more than just a background track, it’s a signal. A vibe. A warning. And this week, it shook the TV world.
