President Trump has reportedly informed his Cabinet that Elon Musk will step down from his role in the administration in the coming months. This news, first reported by NBC News, points to Musk completing his 130-day limit as a special government employee by the end of May.
Musk currently heads DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, and has been leading the charge to slash federal spending and reduce government workforce. His designation as a special government employee limits him to 130 workdays per year, which will be exhausted within weeks.
Despite the report, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly pushed back, calling the Politico story “garbage” and reiterating that Musk will leave only when his work is complete. Trump himself fueled the ambiguity, telling reporters, “I think he’s been amazing… but I also think he’s got a big company to run… At some point, he’s going back.”
That “some point” may be sooner than later.
