Is Elon Musk Really Stepping Down from Trump’s Administration?

President Trump has reportedly informed his Cabinet that Elon Musk will step down from his role in the administration in the coming months. This news, first reported by NBC News, points to Musk completing his 130-day limit as a special government employee by the end of May.

Musk currently heads DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, and has been leading the charge to slash federal spending and reduce government workforce. His designation as a special government employee limits him to 130 workdays per year, which will be exhausted within weeks.

Karoline Leavitt press secretary

Despite the report, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly pushed back, calling the Politico story “garbage” and reiterating that Musk will leave only when his work is complete. Trump himself fueled the ambiguity, telling reporters, “I think he’s been amazing… but I also think he’s got a big company to run… At some point, he’s going back.”

That “some point” may be sooner than later. While Musk said in a recent Fox Business interview that he might stay for another year, the timing of the leaks, just days after the failed Wisconsin Supreme Court bid by Musk-backed Brad Schimel, raises eyebrows about whether his exit is being accelerated behind the scenes.

Musk, who was the largest financial backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, has had outsized influence in policy decisions since his appointment. But with Tesla’s stock taking a hit and global backlash mounting over his political involvement, insiders believe a retreat could be imminent, not just procedural, but strategic.

Until official confirmation lands, Musk’s future in D.C. remains one of the most watched power plays in American politics. Is he stepping down voluntarily, or being subtly phased out? Either way, the Musk-Trump dynamic is shifting, and the aftershocks could ripple across politics, business, and the 2026 campaign trail.
