Karine Jean-Pierre is shaking up D.C. with a surprise move that has insiders talking and critics gasping.
The former White House press secretary just revealed she’s no longer a Democrat, and she’s not keeping quiet about what led to her decision. In her explosive upcoming book Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, Jean-Pierre lays it all out, from what really happened in the final weeks of the Biden administration to why she believes the Democratic Party has completely lost its way.
Jean-Pierre, who made history as the first Black and openly LGBTQ person to serve as White House press secretary, announced her shocking departure from the party in a bold statement on Wednesday. “Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States,” she said. “At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country.” She added that the current political moment demands bold thinking and breaking free of boxes, saying, “We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.”
Her book, set to be released by publisher Legacy Lit, promises to dig deep into the inner workings of the Biden White House, especially the chaos that reportedly erupted during the three weeks before Biden stepped aside from his 2024 re-election campaign. According to the publisher, Jean-Pierre paints a behind-the-scenes picture of betrayal, saying party leaders ultimately turned their backs on Biden, forcing him to abandon his second-term bid.
If that wasn’t enough to ruffle feathers, she also takes on the disinformation and media spin she says has been plaguing American politics in recent years. As someone who lived through the daily press briefings and relentless political pressure, Jean-Pierre is positioning herself as a truth-teller from the inside, even if some of her former colleagues aren’t buying it.
Anonymous insiders quoted in Politico have already started calling her out, accusing her of using the book to stir controversy for personal gain. “She made a joke about being an independent last year, and now it’s a book,” one former staffer said. “All ideas are monetary – even the dumb ones.” Others claimed the book is nothing more than a strategic backup plan, arguing she really just wanted to land a cushy panelist gig on The View like her predecessor, Jen Psaki.
Despite the backlash, Jean-Pierre seems unfazed. She’s clearly enjoying her time out of the West Wing spotlight, telling PEOPLE in March at the opening night of Othello on Broadway that she doesn’t miss the pressure-filled role. “It was an honor and a privilege to have the job and to have done it for two and a half years, but I don’t miss it,” she said. These days, her life is more about sleep, self-care, and quality time with family and friends, a big shift from facing off with reporters in the press briefing room.
Still, not everyone is here for her post-White House transformation. Democratic strategist Caitlin Legacki, who worked in the Biden Commerce Department, didn’t hold back. “Kamala Harris and the entire Biden/Harris campaign did hero’s work to avoid losing 400 electoral votes and giving Republicans a supermajority in Congress,” Legacki said, taking a direct jab at Jean-Pierre’s narrative. “It’s more productive to focus on that and thank Biden for doing the responsible thing by stepping aside than it is to pretend this was an unwarranted act of betrayal.”
No matter where you fall on the issue, one thing’s clear: Karine Jean-Pierre’s book is going to be one of the most talked-about political releases of the year. Whether you see it as a brave callout of a broken system or just another D.C. cash grab disguised as a memoir, Independent is poised to stir up major conversations. And in true D.C. fashion, the drama is just getting started.
