Popular Dark Chocolate Brand Recalled Over Hidden Milk Risk

Lipari Foods has issued a nationwide recall of its dark chocolate nonpareils after discovering the sweet treats contained undeclared milk — a potentially life-threatening risk for consumers with allergies.

The recall was announced on June 20, 2025, and applies to chocolate snacks sold across the U.S. in retail stores.

The affected dark chocolate nonpareils were packed in clear plastic containers and can be identified by the following lot numbers printed on the bottom label: 28202501A, 29202501A, 23202504A, 14202505A, 15202505A, and 03202506A. While no illnesses have been reported yet, Lipari Foods is urging consumers with milk allergies to avoid consuming the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

This recall came after Lipari Foods was notified by Weaver Nut Company, which supplies the product. Weaver Nut had initiated a recall of their own due to the same undeclared milk issue. It was later found that the chocolate treats had been distributed in packaging that didn’t indicate the presence of milk, triggering the broader alert from Lipari.

For customers who’ve already purchased these nonpareils, Lipari has made its consumer hotline available. Concerned buyers can reach them at (586) 447-3500 ext. 9720 with questions or refund inquiries.

Lipari Foods, based in Warren, Michigan, started in 1963 when Jim Lipari sold specialty items out of the back of his station wagon. The company has since grown into one of the leading independent food distributors in the country. Today, Lipari Foods services over 16,000 customers in 32 states, supplying everything from deli items to beverages and confections.

This situation is a sharp reminder of how dangerous undeclared allergens can be for people with food sensitivities. Even products that seem safe can turn harmful if labeling isn’t handled properly. If you or someone in your family has a milk allergy, double-check your pantry for these chocolate treats and return them if they match the lot numbers listed.

The recall emphasizes the importance of accurate food labeling and reinforces why consumers with food allergies should always read packaging closely, even with products they’ve bought before. Lipari’s quick action in issuing this recall shows its commitment to consumer safety, but this incident is a wake-up call for all food suppliers to ensure transparency at every step.
