Starbucks Rival Just Opened In NYC With 99-Cent Drinks

Starbucks might have just met its match, in Lucking Coffee.

China’s largest coffee chain, Luckin Coffee, has officially launched in the United States, opening not one but two new locations in New York City. With over 20,000 stores in China, more than triple the number of Starbucks there, Luckin is stepping boldly into the American coffee arena, starting with the heart of Manhattan.

The first two US Luckin stores are now up and brewing in Greenwich Village and the NoMad district on Sixth Avenue. While the openings were described as soft launches, the buzz was anything but quiet. Staff welcomed the first 100 customers with free tote bags, and drinks were served up for just 99 cents, a clear shot at luring coffee lovers away from pricier competitors.

Luckin is known for its totally cashless approach in China, where customers pay exclusively through the app. That digital-first model is now crossing oceans, with American customers encouraged to download the Luckin Coffee app to unlock deals and place orders. The company teased its stateside arrival with bold Instagram posts like “Luckin Coffee is taking over the city” and “A new brew has entered the chat,” hyping up its debut.

Customer reaction? Pretty much electric. One user begged for Luckin to open stores in Texas, and fans in New York are already comparing the brand’s sleek, tech-forward vibe to Starbucks. While Luckin’s US team hasn’t confirmed any future locations yet, the Instagram account’s response to fan comments suggests this may just be the beginning of a nationwide rollout.

Meanwhile, Starbucks is busy reinventing itself, possibly in anticipation of growing competition. The coffee giant is in the middle of remodeling 1,000 stores, adding power outlets, fresh furniture, and cozy seating to make stores feel less like pit stops and more like hangout hubs. “It’s not just the quick grab-and-go concept,” Starbucks COO Mike Grams told CNN. “Maybe over past years, we lost our way a little bit on that.”

The changes aren’t just cosmetic. Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, who stepped in this past September, laid out a vision to bring the company back to its roots. He’s prioritizing faster service, promising wait times under four minutes, and plans to streamline menus by 30%, making it easier for baristas to deliver “outstanding drinks on time.”

While Starbucks tweaks its foundation, Luckin is playing offense, with fast service, mobile-first ordering, and wallet-friendly prices. And if these NYC stores are a success, it’s only a matter of time before more Luckin signs pop up across the US.
