This week’s Great British Baking Show gave exactly what viewers expect, biscuit genius, emotional mayhem, and some laugh-out-loud Alison Hammond moments.
The challenge was the “capsule collection,” but the show quickly demonstrated that not all bakes are a keeper.
The signature challenge required bakers to design slice-and-bake cookies with hidden images inside. Although the idea seemed straightforward, the actuality was not. Results varied from orange wedges and cupcakes to dogs that closely resembled cats, and even a “sailboat” that was suspiciously like the Millennium Falcon. Tom, as usual, was impressive in his tidiness, but others faired poorly with undercooked outcomes due to finicky colored dough.
Comic relief was much-needed by Alison Hammond, bringing back to mind her notorious oven-door fiasco when she called in on frazzled Leighton. She later couldn’t help teasing Aaron’s anime-style biscuits, which looked for a brief moment like co-host Noel Fielding before Alison altered the design. Biscuits achieved with both flavor and technique impressed the judges despite the giggles, as did Jessika’s bacon-and-egg toast biscuits. Tom amazed by producing nothing short of the Hagia Sophia in biscuit shape.
At the opposite end, Nadia’s matcha avocado biscuits failed, Toby’s peanut-butter-loaded bakes polarized the judges, and Pui Man went wrong with ox-shaped cookies that turned out to look like something else.
The technical challenge saw the inclusion of Hobnobs, a beloved British favorite, though with Prue’s creative twist of caramel and feathered chocolate. The bakers soon discovered that Hobnobs do not typically contain caramel. Most of them had runny or hard-as-rock fillings, and unfortunate Pui Man goofed on every step and created what could best be termed as “Hobslobs.” Leighton’s biscuits failed as well, with chocolate so thick and messy that it resembled something almost inedible.
Nataliia and Nadia were at the top together, but it was Toby that won for the second consecutive week, with a clean finish and taste. Alison made a joke that whereas Toby doesn’t succeed in planned bakes, his unplanned techs shine, a trend to look out for.
The showstopper task involved bakers constructing biscuit-based time capsules that contained five edible mementos. Creative as it sounds, the concept was flawed-sounding, how long would an edible time capsule actually last? Nonetheless, the bakers persevered.
Leighton also ran out of time, trying to put together a piano-shaped box which ended up crumbling. His Blue Peter Badge-themed memento was also underwhelming, sealing his own fate. Nadia’s cake slice attempt also fell, while Toby’s treasure chest was tasty but wasn’t flavorful.
Others, though, flew. Jasmine astonished with a box themed on the Scottish Highlands full of bright, yummy biscuits which Prue declared “a blinder.” Pui Man, who had been at rock-bottom place, saved herself with a Hong Kong floating restaurant rebuilt in gingerbread, demonstrating her skills with tricky constructions. Inside, she put almond cookies tied to her heritage, a sweet and emotional return that saved her place.
But Tom was the star of the week. His theater, a recreation of his Danish grandmother’s cottage, was perfect right down to the moss on the roof. Stuffed with digestives, brandy snaps, and citrus flavor, it was wowing to look at and taste. Paul Hollywood called it flawless and gave him the highly sought-after Hollywood Handshake, though some say it should be only for signing, not showstoppers. Nevertheless, Tom’s consistency and charm earned him Star Baker.
The show concluded with Leighton being evicted. His wit and personality added vibrancy to the tent, but his bakes always came up short. His one-liners will be missed by fans, but his elimination felt like a certainty.
This week confirmed why The Great British Baking Show is still compulsive watching: a mixture of breathtaking artistry, baking catastrophes, and loads of character. With Tom in the lead, Aaron stealing hearts, and Alison keeping morale high, the series continues to deliver both drama and joy.
