United Airlines’ New June 3 Rule Could Leave You Stranded — Here’s What to Know

If you’re flying United Airlines starting June 3, don’t cut it close. The airline is enforcing a strict new rule that could leave last-minute passengers stuck at the terminal — even if they don’t have checked bags.

Here’s what’s changing:

Effective June 3, 2025, all domestic passengers on United Airlines will be required to check in no later than 45 minutes before their scheduled departure time — even if they aren’t checking luggage. That’s a 15-minute increase from the current 30-minute rule and applies to all domestic flights operated by United.

If you don’t make that 45-minute cutoff, you won’t be allowed to board.

This policy brings the domestic check-in deadline in line with United’s requirement for passengers with checked bags and aligns more closely with international check-in policies, which already require a 60-minute minimum. International timelines will remain unchanged.

Why the Change?

United says the updated rule is about improving efficiency and helping their staff better manage the boarding process. With growing passenger volumes and tighter turnaround times — especially during peak summer travel — even a few late arrivals can throw off operations.

According to the airline, the added time will help gate agents deal with last-minute logistics like seating changes and carry-on questions before boarding begins, rather than during the final scramble.

What This Means for You:

  • Don’t assume the 30-minute rule applies anymore. If your check-in is time-stamped at 44 minutes or less before takeoff, you’re at risk of being denied boarding — even with no luggage to check.
  • Plan to arrive at the airport earlier, especially during busy periods like holidays and summer travel. United recommends arriving at least 90 minutes before domestic flights to account for check-in, security, and potential delays.
  • Use the app. Mobile check-in is still available and can save time — but if you miss that 45-minute mark, even digital check-ins will be blocked.

Why It Matters Now:

With Memorial Day kicking off the summer travel season, millions of Americans are flying, and airports are already overwhelmed. AAA predicts over 3.6 million air travelers for the holiday weekend — and flight volumes are expected to remain high throughout June.

That means longer lines at security, limited curbside drop-off space, and packed terminals — all reasons not to cut it close.

Bottom Line:

United Airlines’ new 45-minute check-in rule for domestic flights takes effect June 3, 2025, and it’s not flexible. Whether you’re flying to Chicago, Denver, or Orlando, if you’re not checked in 45 minutes ahead, you’re not flying.

Set an alarm. Skip the coffee line. And check in early — or risk missing your flight.
