USPS Delivery Problems in North Carolina Leave Thousands Without Mail

The USPS is under fire once again, and this time it’s not just a late delivery or a misrouted package, it’s 74,000 pieces of abandoned mail found sitting unprocessed in just four facilities in North Carolina.

That’s the shocking result of an Inspector General’s report that zoomed in on USPS centers in the Charlotte region. Thousands of letters and packages were never even scanned into the system, meaning customers were left completely in the dark about where their mail went.

Frustrated customers didn’t hold back. One man who relies on USPS regularly said his package, meant to be delivered in Greenville, somehow ended up in Gastonia, then Charlotte, and finally made a bizarre detour to Anaheim, California. He didn’t mince words: “It’s a failed system. I think it’s abysmal.”

It’s not just consumers raising red flags. Miriam Bell, president of the local American Postal Workers Union, called the report “embarrassing” and blamed mismanagement, chronic understaffing, and unrealistic delivery deadlines. “Our employees are hard workers that care about their job,” she added, but the system is clearly straining under pressure.

USPS officials have said they’re working with the four North Carolina mail centers to fix the issue, but the report leaves a much bigger question hanging: If this much chaos was discovered in just a few centers over a short time, what’s really going on across the rest of the country?

North Carolina’s current USPS performance rating is a mediocre 69.9 out of 80, but other states are reportedly faring even worse. Georgia, Ohio, and Louisiana are among the lowest-rated for USPS service, raising even more concerns about severe delays and possible mail mishandling elsewhere.

While customers fume, the USPS itself has laid out its own list of problems. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sent a warning to Congress earlier this year, listing four major challenges: outdated and overpriced retail leases, a billion-dollar counterfeit postage problem, unfunded federal mandates costing billions, and harsh regulatory restrictions that have cost the Postal Service over $50 billion in losses.

Adding to the tension, USPS customers should brace for more changes. Starting July 1, the final stage of the agency’s cost-cutting strategy rolls out. This includes price hikes on certain package services. First-class mail, marketing mail, and periodicals were already adjusted on April 1. There’s also a planned 24-hour mail blackout on July 4 as all USPS operations shut down for the holiday, meaning delivery delays are about to get even longer.

For many loyal USPS users, this latest scandal is the last straw. As inspections reveal staggering issues in just a few days and locations, it’s clear the problems run deep. From undelivered mail to rising prices and increased wait times, USPS has some major repairing to do, and fast.
