Walgreens Store Closures 2025: Full List of 54 Locations Shutting Down Across 17 States

Walgreens is dialing down its national footprint in a major way, as part of a sweeping cost-cutting and restructuring strategy, the pharmacy chain has announced it will deploy 54 more stores closures across 17 states, with this list of closures happening as early as May 19 and stretching through late June.

These closures are part of the company’s larger plan to close 1,200 stores over the next three years, aiming to consolidate operations and improve profitability.

What’s Behind the Closures?

The announcement comes amid what Walgreens has described as a “strategic transformation.” Following rising industry pressures, including falling prescription reimbursements, shoplifting, inflation, and fierce competition from Amazon and Walmart, the company is working to shed underperforming locations.

CEO Tim Wentworth previously announced a $1 billion cost-cutting plan, which began with a wave of 500 closures scheduled throughout 2025. The goal: shift focus to the most profitable areas while adapting to the new retail pharmacy landscape.

What Walgreens Said

In a statement, Walgreens acknowledged the impact on communities:

“It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance.”

The company is encouraging customers to transfer prescriptions to nearby Walgreens locations, either online or in-store, with banners posted on closing store websites offering guidance on how to do so.

How to Transfer Your Prescription

If your local Walgreens is closing, the company recommends:

  • Using the Walgreens app or website to transfer your prescription
  • Updating your auto-refill settings to redirect to another nearby location
  • Opting into delivery, if available in your area

For assistance, customers can visit Walgreens.com or call customer support.

Walgreens Isn’t Alone

The wave of pharmacy closures extends beyond Walgreens. Rite Aid is currently shutting down 68 stores this month amid its second bankruptcy filing, and CVS has also scaled back operations across the U.S.

Analysts say the industry’s major pressure points, shrinking reimbursements, inflation, and competition from Amazon, are pushing all chains to rethink their business models.
