If you were one of the unlucky people hit by a major 2024 cyberattack, you’re likely sitting on a pile of unclaimed cash, but you’ll need to act fast.
A nearly $1 million settlement has been approved after Christie’s, the luxury auction house, suffered a serious data breach in May 2024 that exposed tons of private information. Now, victims can claim up to $10,100, depending on where they live and whether they can prove any financial fallout.
The leaked info? Not just emails or usernames, this breach compromised names, birth dates, nationalities, passport numbers, driver’s license info, and more. Christie’s didn’t admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to cough up $990,000 to wrap up the legal mess. Notices were already sent to those impacted, and only people who received that notice are eligible for a payout.
Here’s how it breaks down:
What You Can Claim | How Much | Conditions |
---|---|---|
Reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses | Up to $10,000 | Must provide proof (receipts, bills, bank charges) |
Flat cash payment | Around $100 | No documents needed |
Extra payment for Californians | +$100 | Automatic if you live in California |
Credit monitoring & identity insurance | Free (2 years) | No opt-in required |
The final date to file your claim is June 19, 2025, so if you’re eligible and haven’t submitted yet, you’re running out of time. The deadline to object or opt out already passed on May 20, 2025, which means you’re locked into the deal unless you already took action.
Apart from the cash, claimants will also get two years of top-tier credit monitoring (covering all three bureaus) and $1 million in identity theft insurance, definitely not a bad deal considering the level of data that got compromised.
And this isn’t the only money Americans are leaving on the table right now. If you happen to own one of those defective fridges sold by Whirlpool or its partner brands, you could be owed up to $300. The issue? A frost buildup problem that interferes with cooling. Whirlpool settled a separate case for that one.
Oh, and tech giant HP is also paying out cash, part of a $4 million settlement over misleading discounts on its website. If you ever bought something you thought was on sale from HP’s online store, you might’ve been duped by fake markdowns and could get a cut of that payout too.
Bottom line? If you were affected by any of these class action messes, there’s real money on the line, and in the case of the Christie’s breach, the clock is ticking. File your paperwork now or risk missing out completely.
