Trent Alexander-Arnold’s era at Liverpool is officially coming to an end, the 26-year-old England international will join Real Madrid this summer, in one of the most significant transfers of 2025.
Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano dropped his signature “Here we go!” announcement, confirming that Alexander-Arnold has agreed to terms with the Spanish club, and paperwork is currently being prepared.
“Trent Alexander-Arnold will be new Real Madrid player this summer,” Romano posted. “The decision to leave Liverpool is confirmed… and the deal is agreed.”
Alexander-Arnold will sign a five-year contract with Real Madrid, according to multiple sources. The transfer has been in the works since March 2024, when Los Blancos identified the Liverpool right-back as a top priority to reinforce their defensive line.
While Liverpool had hoped to extend his contract and keep their homegrown talent at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold reportedly felt the time was right for a new challenge in Spain, both professionally and personally.
Real Madrid are keen to finalize the move before the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in mid-June 2025 in the United States. The club wants Alexander-Arnold registered and available to participate.
To make that possible, Liverpool are said to be open to an early release, ahead of his contract’s official June 30 expiry. But there are conditions:
- Trent must formally request the early release
- He must forgo his June salary
- Real Madrid would pay a compensation fee, likely between €1.5–2 million
If all sides agree, the England star could make his debut in Madrid white far sooner than expected.
Alexander-Arnold’s move also means a reunion with close friend and England teammate Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid in 2023. The duo formed a strong bond with the national team, and their chemistry could now benefit Madrid both domestically and in Europe.
This transfer signals Madrid’s continued focus on young, elite-level talent, following previous high-profile signings like Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
The departure of one of Liverpool’s most iconic modern players leaves a huge gap in the team. Trent, a Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool, has redefined the fullback position during his time at the club.
Liverpool will now look to the likes of Conor Bradley or a new external signing to step into the role next season.
