Marcus Rashford is finally finding his rhythm at Aston Villa – and his timing couldn’t be better.
After weeks of building fitness and adjusting to life on loan from Manchester United, Rashford scored his first goals for Villa in a convincing 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Preston. Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, the England international called the moment “a great feeling,” reflecting on his steady progress since arriving.
“I feel like I’ve slowly been getting fitter and playing better football since I’ve been here,” Rashford said. “It’s obviously nice for a forward to always get goals, so hopefully it continues.”
The performance marks a potential turning point for Rashford, who had struggled for minutes and form at Manchester United before making the surprise move to Villa Park. Now, with the FA Cup semi-finals ahead and a Champions League campaign still alive, the forward has a shot at a redemptive run-in.
“I think we have to just take it one game at a time and just give 100 per cent on the pitch and we’ll see where it takes us,” he said. “But I think we’re a very ambitious team. We want to win, we want to try and get as far as we can in all competitions. And we also want to push to get back into the top four.”
Rashford acknowledged he’s still short of full match sharpness, but insisted he’s close to top form. “Step by step. I think I can still get fitter,” he admitted. “I’ve missed a lot of football before joining up with them. So at the minute my body feels good and I’m injury free and just enjoying my football. So all good for now.”
The timing couldn’t be more crucial. Villa are fighting on multiple fronts and Rashford’s return to goalscoring form adds a powerful weapon to Unai Emery’s squad. With Ollie Watkins already in hot form, Rashford’s clinical finishing could be the difference-maker in tight games ahead.
His two-goal display against Preston wasn’t just a personal relief – it was also a signal to Thomas Tuchal, who is set to finalize his England squad for the Euros. Rashford will need to maintain his upward trajectory to lock in his spot, especially with fierce competition in attacking positions.
For now, Rashford is focused on consistency, fitness, and helping Villa reach silverware. If Sunday’s performance is any indication, his loan spell might be about to catch fire.
