Raiders Legend Rich Stephens Dies at 60

The Las Vegas Raiders are in mourning after the death of former offensive lineman Rich Stephens at the age of 60.

The NFL franchise paid tribute to their ex-player in a heartfelt statement released Monday, saying, “The Raiders Family is mourning the passing of Rich Stephens, who played in two seasons with the Silver and Black. The thoughts of the entire Raider Nation are with Rich’s family at this time.” Stephens’ legacy with the team, spanning both their Los Angeles and Oakland eras, continues to be cherished by fans who echoed the sentiment with heartfelt messages online, “Once a Raider, always a Raider.”

Rich Stephens wasn’t just another big guy on the line, standing tall at 6-foot-7 and weighing 310 pounds, he brought serious power to the trenches. The St. Louis native played college football at Tulsa before being selected in the ninth round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. However, it was the Raiders who gave him his NFL break, where he made the most of two standout seasons.

His biggest year came in 1993, when he suited up for all 16 games. That season was notable not just for his consistent play but also because it marked the final time the Raiders made the playoffs while still based in Los Angeles. Though Stephens missed the 1994 season, he returned in 1995 to appear in 13 games, his final NFL run, coinciding with the Raiders’ first year back in Oakland.

Before his NFL career, Stephens made waves in the World League of American Football (WLAF), playing two seasons with the Sacramento Surge. He was part of the Surge squad that clinched a World Bowl title in 1992, a career high point before the league folded and restructured. That success paved the way for his eventual signing with the Raiders.

Beyond stats and tackles, Stephens was known for his personality. According to his obituary on stlfuneral.com, “Rich was dearly loved within the Raiders Organization as his personality was a blessing to the morale and wellness of many.” His death has shaken Raider Nation, with tributes pouring in across social media. One fan wrote, “Rest easy, Uncle Rich,” while another added, “Rest up, big man.” Once a Raider, always a Raider.”

The timing of the announcement also comes as the NFL prepares for the 2025 season, with dates now set, from free agency beginning on March 12 to the Super Bowl slated for February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium. As fans look ahead, many will remember legends like Rich Stephens, who contributed to the legacy of one of football’s most iconic franchises.

Rich’s impact goes beyond the field, he represented an era of Raiders football that spanned cities, championships, and change. His legacy will remain deeply embedded in the franchise’s culture and among fans who remember his presence as more than just a number on a jersey.
