Sarina Wiegman is almost set on her final England Euro 2025 squad.
The Lionesses boss confirmed that the official announcement will come on Thursday, June 5, and she’s already got a pretty clear idea of who’ll be lining up against France in their opening match on July 5.
“We’re close,” Wiegman said. “We’ll name the squad on Thursday, and I’m also close to deciding on the starting XI. But there’s still a month to go. We’ve got the Jamaica game coming up, so a few things are still open.”
England’s final preparations took a hit with a 2-1 loss to Spain in the Nations League on June 3. But Wiegman saw it as a useful test rather than a setback. “It was a very intense game. We know Spain are great on the ball, but I thought we did well in parts,” she said.
The match highlighted areas England could improve. Wiegman pointed to decision-making in attack and how the team could’ve exploited Spain more if they had avoided offsides and moved the ball quicker. “In the second half, Spain upped their press and we struggled a bit. They brought Pina in, and she really made a difference with her control and shooting.”
Despite the defeat, the coach called the camp “very positive” overall. It was the last chance for players to make their case for the final tournament selection, and Wiegman appreciated the competitive spirit among the squad. “We’ve had players coming back from injury, others fighting for spots. It’s been good to see that hunger. That kind of competition is exactly what we want.”
With the final squad announcement just days away, England are gearing up for one last friendly against Jamaica before heading into the Euros. Players will either rest or continue training depending on individual needs. Then it’s full focus on France, one of the toughest group opponents.
Wiegman’s confidence in her team’s progress is clear, but she knows there’s still work to be done. The tactical fine-tuning and selection decisions in the coming weeks will be crucial if the Lionesses are to defend their European title successfully.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see who makes the cut. The big reveal on June 5 will show just how tight the competition has been and which players have earned their spot to represent England on the biggest stage this summer.
As the countdown to Euro 2025 continues, all eyes are on Wiegman and the choices she makes next.
