Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has made it clear that the decision to play in the 2026 World Cup will be entirely up to Lionel Messi.
With Argentina already securing qualification for the tournament in North America, all eyes are on Messi and whether he will attempt to win football’s biggest prize one more time.
Scaloni isn’t pressuring his captain and believes Messi should take his time before making a decision. “We will see what happens, there’s plenty of time,” Scaloni said. “We must go one game at a time, otherwise we will be speaking about the same thing all year. We need to leave him alone. He will decide whenever he wants – let’s not drive him crazy with this.”
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami, missed Argentina’s recent victories over Uruguay and Brazil due to injury. As long as I maintain that feeling and can continue contributing to the team, I plan to be here enjoying the national team.” Messi’s leadership and experience have been invaluable to Argentina. Even after winning the 2022 World Cup, his influence remains a key factor in the team’s success. However, his future with the squad beyond Copa América 2025 remains uncertain.
Argentina will enter the 2026 World Cup as one of the favorites, regardless of Messi’s participation. Scaloni has built a well-balanced team that combines young talent with experienced veterans. If Messi chooses to play, he would be 39 years old when the tournament begins.

Cristiano Ronaldo played in Qatar 2022 at 37, while Dani Alves was 39. Messi could follow in their footsteps if he feels physically capable.

Messi has earned the right to choose his own path, whether that means retiring from international football or leading Argentina one last time. His legacy is already cemented.
