Will Messi Play the 2026 World Cup? Argentina Coach Drops a Big Hint

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has made it clear that the decision to play in the 2026 World Cup will be entirely up to Lionel Messi.

With Argentina already securing qualification for the tournament in North America, all eyes are on Messi and whether he will attempt to win football’s biggest prize one more time.

Scaloni isn’t pressuring his captain and believes Messi should take his time before making a decision. “We will see what happens, there’s plenty of time,” Scaloni said. “We must go one game at a time, otherwise we will be speaking about the same thing all year. We need to leave him alone. He will decide whenever he wants – let’s not drive him crazy with this.”

Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami, missed Argentina’s recent victories over Uruguay and Brazil due to injury. However, despite his absence, La Albiceleste proved they can still dominate South America’s best teams. While the team moves forward, the lingering question remains – will Messi lead Argentina one more time at the World Cup?

Messi has been open about his approach to the next stage of his career. He previously stated that he values happiness and health over chasing another World Cup title.

Speaking in October 2024, he made it clear that he isn’t rushing to make a final decision. “In the moment, we will see,” Messi said. “I don’t like to accelerate time or look ahead. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can keep playing at this level to feel good and be happy.” The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted that his goal isn’t necessarily to reach the 2026 World Cup, but rather to take things one step at a time. “I haven’t set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more so to live day-to-day and be well,” he added.

Despite keeping his future plans open, Messi has not ruled out playing for Argentina as long as he still feels he can contribute.

Messi has always expressed his love for wearing the Argentina shirt. Even as one of the oldest players in the squad, he finds joy in being part of a new generation of La Albiceleste stars. “It’s a joy to be present and appreciate this moment,” Messi said. “Being surrounded by younger teammates, given my age, makes me feel like a kid again. I find myself doing silly things because I feel so comfortable. As long as I maintain that feeling and can continue contributing to the team, I plan to be here enjoying the national team.” Messi’s leadership and experience have been invaluable to Argentina. Even after winning the 2022 World Cup, his influence remains a key factor in the team’s success. However, his future with the squad beyond Copa América 2025 remains uncertain.

Argentina will enter the 2026 World Cup as one of the favorites, regardless of Messi’s participation. Scaloni has built a well-balanced team that combines young talent with experienced veterans. If Messi chooses to play, he would be 39 years old when the tournament begins.

While that may seem old for a footballer, his performances for Inter Miami and Argentina suggest he still has plenty to offer. His technical ability, vision, and leadership could make a huge difference in Argentina’s title defense. Some of football’s greatest players have competed in World Cups well into their late 30s. Cristiano Ronaldo played in Qatar 2022 at 37, while Dani Alves was 39. Messi could follow in their footsteps if he feels physically capable.

While fans around the world hope to see Messi play in 2026, Scaloni’s comments make it clear that no one is pushing him into a decision. Messi has earned the right to choose his own path, whether that means retiring from international football or leading Argentina one last time. His legacy is already cemented. Winning the 2022 World Cup fulfilled a lifelong dream and removed the one missing piece from his career. Anything beyond that would simply be an added chapter to an already legendary story.

Messi’s final decision may come closer to the tournament, possibly after Copa América 2025. Until then, the football world will wait and hope for one last dance on the biggest stage.

Do you think Lionel Messi should play in the 2026 World Cup? Will Argentina be able to defend their title without him? Drop your thoughts in the comments and share this article with fellow football fans!
