After nearly two decades of Xbox loyalty, Gears of War is making a surprise move, and it’s coming a lot sooner than you’d think.
For the first time ever, Gears of War is breaking through the Xbox barrier. The Coalition has officially revealed Gears of War: Reloaded, a fully remastered version of the original 2006 classic, with stunning upgrades, no loading screens, and cross-play across Xbox, PC, and (wait for it)… PlayStation 5.
So when can you squad up with Marcus Fenix and relive the chainsaw glory in 4K? Let’s just say the countdown has already begun, keep reading to find out.
What Is Gears of War: Reloaded?
This isn’t just a texture polish. Reloaded is a full rebuild of the original Gears with:
- 4K visuals
- 60 FPS Campaign / 120 FPS Multiplayer
- Cross-play and cross-progression
- Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos support
- Instant loading (literally zero load times)
It also includes all DLC from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, and you can play the entire campaign in two-player co-op, online or split-screen. Multiplayer supports up to 8 players, with seamless matchmaking across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
Even better: no Microsoft account is required for basic cross-play. But if you want to carry over your progression across platforms or invite friends directly, logging in with one unlocks full features.
A First for PlayStation Players
For die-hard Sony fans, this is a huge moment. Gears has long been one of Xbox’s most guarded exclusives. Now, Reloaded is finally opening the door for PlayStation gamers to experience the brutal, cover-based shooter that defined a generation.
Mike Crump, Studio Head at The Coalition, said it best:
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means… With Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever.”
And he wasn’t kidding.
So When Is It Dropping?
Here’s the kicker: it’s sooner than you think.
The Coalition has circled a late-summer date for the official launch, one that longtime fans might want to mark in bold. We’ll give you a hint: it’s exactly 121 days away from today. Want the exact release date? Let’s just say it’s locked, loaded, and already sending codes to early Ultimate Edition owners. Okay fine, since you’re here: it’s August 26, 2025. You’re welcome.
Free Upgrade for Some Players
If you already bought the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition digitally before the Reloaded announcement, you won’t need to buy anything again. Microsoft is handing out Reloaded for free to those early adopters, just watch your Xbox messages for a download code.
Final Word: Why You Should Be Excited
Whether you’re nostalgic for Delta Squad’s gritty first mission or you’re about to experience it for the first time on a new console, Gears of War: Reloaded looks like a remaster done right. Smooth performance, gorgeous visuals, and no more console walls to separate friends.
Don’t sleep on this. August isn’t that far away.
