If you’ve opened Spotify today only to be met with an endless loading screen or silence where your playlists should be, you’re not alone in thinking it’s down.
As of the morning of April 9, 2025, Spotify users across the United States and parts of Europe are reporting widespread issues with streaming music, logging into accounts, and accessing playlists.
Reports began flooding Downdetector shortly after 8:00 AM ET, with over 50,000 users flagging problems by 9:00 AM. Most complaints center around music not playing, app crashes, and being logged out without warning. The disruption appears to be affecting both mobile and desktop apps, as well as web access.
Spotify’s official status page has not yet confirmed a full outage, but the company did post a vague message on its X (formerly Twitter) support account, writing: “We’re aware some listeners are experiencing issues and we’re investigating. Stay tuned for updates.”
No specific cause has been cited yet, but tech analysts speculate this may be tied to a backend infrastructure update or a temporary overload in their CDN (content delivery network). Spotify has made several major updates to its platform over the past few months, including changes to its Premium tiers, AI DJ functionality, and integration with more smart devices, any of which could be introducing system-wide instability.
Interestingly, the outage comes just days after Spotify publicly denied rumors that it was bringing ads to its Premium music tier. While the two events are likely unrelated, some users on social media are already connecting the dots and venting their frustrations.
“So no ads on Premium, but also no music? Cool,” one user tweeted sarcastically. Another user wrote, “Spotify went from ‘wrapped’ to ‘crashed’ real quick.”
Spotify is one of the world’s largest music streaming services, with over 600 million users globally. A disruption of this scale highlights just how many people rely on the app daily, not just for music, but for podcasts, background noise while working, and even mental health support like sleep playlists and guided meditations.
As of 11:00 AM ET, some users are reporting a return to partial functionality, especially on mobile. However, the fix doesn’t seem universal. Others are still seeing blank home screens, songs stuck on loading, and recurring “Something went wrong” error messages.
If you’re affected, try these steps:
- Log out and log back into the app
- Clear cache (on Android or desktop)
- Reboot your device
- Check Spotify’s support channels for real-time updates
If none of that works, it might just be a waiting game.
We’ll continue to monitor Spotify’s status and provide updates as the situation evolves. Until then, maybe it’s time to dust off that old MP3 player or finally check out what Apple Music is offering.
Let us know in the comments: Are you experiencing issues with Spotify? If so, where are you located, and what kind of problems are you seeing? Your feedback helps us track the scope of the outage.
