Star Wars Battlefront III buzz grows as ex-DICE devs eye a return and player numbers spike thanks to Andor.
With a noticeable resurgence in player activity, thanks in large part to the recent Andor series on Disney+, the idea of Battlefront III doesn’t sound as far-fetched as it once did.
Mats Helge Holm, one of the game’s former developers, sparked excitement online with a Reddit post where he said he and some of his ex-DICE colleagues are eager to reunite. “Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together,” Holm shared, reflecting on their time working on the 2017 shooter.
That game, developed by DICE and published by EA, hasn’t received updates in more than five years. Yet despite the long silence, it recently hit a peak of 9,777 concurrent players on Steam, the highest number since early 2021. That doesn’t even include console players or those using platforms like the EA App or Epic Games Store, suggesting the real numbers are much higher.
The renewed interest seems tied directly to the impact of Andor, the gritty Disney+ series set in the Star Wars universe. Fans of the show have returned to Battlefront II to relive moments and environments inspired by the franchise, pushing the game back into the spotlight.
However, Holm admits bringing back the full team might be tough, especially when it comes to Dennis Branvall, the former creative director of Battlefront II. Branvall left DICE in 2020 to form his own studio, Wayfinder Games. Holm noted, “Dennis is a hard one to get back, last I checked he moved up north. Not an easy commute.”
Still, the enthusiasm is clearly there. The developers know the audience is waiting, and the timing couldn’t be better. With EA holding the publishing rights and the Star Wars IP as strong as ever, the possibility of a Battlefront III, especially one fueled by returning devs, has fans buzzing.
Of course, nothing official has been confirmed. EA hasn’t commented, and there’s no indication that a new game is in development. But the sudden surge in player numbers, combined with the developers’ interest, shows there’s both passion and demand.
If anything, it’s proof that Battlefront II still has a loyal fanbase and that the galaxy far, far away might yet have another massive multiplayer shooter on the horizon.
For now, fans can only hope the right people hear the call and make Star Wars Battlefront III a reality.
