Samsung is taking its cinematic technology up a notch by expanding the Onyx Cinema LED experience across Europe.
In collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios, this rollout promises to change the way audiences enjoy animated and live-action films.
After debuting at CinemaCon 2025 in the U.S., Samsung’s Onyx Cinema LED display is making waves for being the world’s first DCI-certified LED cinema screen. This display supports an ultra-smooth frame rate of up to 120Hz at a 4K resolution, ensuring crisp, lifelike visuals.
Four screen sizes, five, ten, fourteen, and twenty meters, along with scalable configurations give theaters flexibility without compromising image quality. That means even smaller venues can now offer the largest possible screen size, maintaining stunning resolution and color accuracy across the board.
Samsung is teaming up with Pixar to make the most of this advanced technology. Their goal is to bring Pixar’s HDR-mastered films to life with vivid detail, richer contrast, and more accurate colors. Pixar’s latest movie, Elio, is already available in 4K HDR and fully optimized for Samsung Onyx screens.
But this partnership goes beyond distribution. Pixar is also installing an Onyx Cinema LED screen at its headquarters in Emeryville, California. The idea is to use it during film production to test HDR visuals, evaluate brightness and color output, and host screenings for filmmakers. This makes it easier for Pixar’s post-production teams to ensure their work looks perfect on cinema screens worldwide.
Hoon Chung, EVP of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, says Europe is a key market for pushing cinema innovation forward. “The launch of Onyx marks a new chapter in our commitment to premium movie experiences,” he said. “By partnering with cinema chains like Pathé and creative pioneers like Pixar, we’re giving the industry tools to tell better stories in visually stunning ways.”
Jessie Schroeder, VP of Post Production at Pixar, echoed this excitement. “Samsung’s Onyx screens allow our artists to present stories exactly how they envisioned, vivid, dynamic, and true to life,” she said. Schroeder emphasized how mastering films in HDR for Onyx screens unlocks a new level of storytelling.
With HDR-format movies quickly becoming the new standard, this move by Samsung and Pixar feels like the natural next step in cinema evolution. It’s not just about better tech, it’s about giving audiences a deeper emotional connection to what they see on screen.
So if you’re planning a movie night and see a theater with Samsung Onyx, it’s worth checking out. The visuals are sharper, the colors pop, and the experience is closer than ever to what filmmakers imagined when they created it.
In short, Samsung Onyx Cinema LED isn’t just a screen upgrade, it’s a full-on leap into the future of how we watch movies.
