Bella Ramsey’s Journey to an Autism Diagnosis
Bella Ramsey, the talented actor known for their roles in The Last of Us and Game of Thrones, recently shared their autism diagnosis, shedding light on how it has influenced their life and career.
In an interview with British Vogue, Ramsey revealed that their diagnosis came during the filming of The Last of Us, sparked by a conversation with a crew member who recognized the signs.
Recognizing the Signs
While filming in Canada, a crew member with an autistic daughter observed traits in Ramsey that reminded them of their child. This prompted Ramsey to seek a formal psychiatric assessment, ultimately leading to their autism diagnosis. Reflecting on their past, Ramsey recalled feeling different from peers, often finding solace in adult conversations rather than socializing with classmates.
Sensory Sensitivities and Challenges
Ramsey described common sensory challenges associated with autism, such as heightened awareness of others’ micro-expressions and discomfort with certain clothing textures. During The Last of Us production, wearing multiple layers of heavy waterproof gear in the Canadian wilderness felt overwhelming, reinforcing their experiences of sensory overload.
Autism and Acting: A Unique Connection
Despite the challenges, Ramsey credits their autism with enhancing their acting abilities. Their natural inclination to observe people closely and study interactions has helped them portray characters with depth and authenticity. They also find comfort in the structured nature of a film set, where routines, call times, and clear directions provide a sense of stability.
“I’ve always been watching and learning from people,” Ramsey shared. “Having to manually learn social interactions has helped me understand character dynamics better.”
Embracing Authenticity and “Unmasking”
For Ramsey, receiving an autism diagnosis was a liberating experience. They described it as “freeing,” allowing them to extend more grace to themselves and embrace their true identity.
“My experience of moving through the world is as an autistic person,” they explained. “There’s no reason for people not to know.”
Advocacy and Awareness
By sharing their diagnosis, Ramsey hopes to contribute to broader conversations about neurodiversity in the entertainment industry. Their openness encourages others to embrace self-acceptance and challenge misconceptions about autism.
Bella Ramsey’s journey highlights the importance of understanding neurodiversity and embracing individuality. Their story is a powerful reminder that differences should be celebrated, not masked.
