Turns out Billy Porter, the larger-than-life star of Pose, is a lotore low-key than fans might think. While the Emmy-winning actor has lit up stages from Broadway to the West End and made countless red carpet statements, Billy Porter says he’s secretly an introvert.
In a new interview with Town & Country, he opened up about how his public persona doesn’t reflect how he truly feels when he’s offstage.
Talking about what brings him joy, Billy revealed, “True kindness. You wouldn’t know it, but… I’m an introvert.” He admitted he’s learned how to perform extroversion because his job demands it, but when he’s not working, he just wants to be around close friends and chill at home. “It’s something that’s shifted over the years,” he said. “I think I started out as an extrovert as a young person.”
Billy Porter’s introvert side doesn’t mean he’s slowing down. Right now, he’s starring in the West End production of Cabaret alongside Marisha Wallace and loving his time in London. He called the experience “really healing” and praised the city’s energy, openness, and creativity. “I love the people, the architecture, the sex positivity, it’s very healing to me,” he said, getting candid about what makes London stand out.
Even in a city buzzing with energy, Billy’s still staying grounded. He spoke about the changing relationship with his mom, saying it evolved from distance due to queerness and religion into something loving and close. That emotional growth seems to matter more to him than any fame or success. “Your epitaph would read…‘He loved unconditionally and was loved,’” he said, summing up his outlook with signature heart and flair.
Outside the spotlight, Billy Porter is also focused on bigger issues, like climate change. He doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but he believes in staying aware and doing whatever small things individuals can do to help. “None of us can do it alone,” he said. “It’s a collective choice and requires collective action.”
And in case you were wondering, no, he doesn’t buy into the whole “greatest failure” narrative. For Billy, every setback is just another life lesson. “I don’t think in terms of failure,” he explained. “Everything happens for a reason.”
So yeah, the man who redefined red carpet fashion and gave Pose its iconic soul is just as human and chill as the rest of us. Billy Porter may slay the stage, but deep down, he’s an introvert who loves good vibes, close friendships, and staying grounded.
