Chris Evans recently revealed that despite his best efforts, he believes he “screwed up” his marriage proposal to now-wife Alba Baptista.
The actor, 43, shared in an interview with The Knot that he had spent considerable time practicing how to propose in Portuguese, his wife’s native language, but nerves got the best of him at the crucial moment.
“I proposed to my wife in Portuguese,” Evans said. “She’s Portuguese, so I learned how to say, ‘Will you marry me?’ in Portuguese. I had practiced it all week… I got really nervous when it came time to do it. I actually think I screwed it up, but I still know it.”
Evans confessed he was so focused on perfecting the phrase that he would catch himself saying it out loud while doing everyday tasks, like making breakfast. “I had practiced it so much that while I’d be making breakfast and you almost just start saying it out loud. Like, ‘Oh God, that’s not just a song that’s stuck in my head! It’s gonna let the cat out of the bag.’”
Despite any doubts about his delivery, the proposal clearly did the job. Chris and Alba have now been married for two years. The couple kept their engagement under wraps and surprised fans when news broke of their marriage. The Avengers: Endgame star later confirmed that they actually had not one, but two wedding ceremonies, one on the East Coast and another in Portugal.
Speaking about the weddings at New York Comic Con in 2023, Chris said, “It was really, really great. We kinda had two ceremonies. We had one on the East Coast. We did one in Portugal. They were wonderful and beautiful. It’s a lot of planning a wedding. For those of you who are married, it takes a lot out of you. Now that we’re through that, we’ve just kinda been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn, my favorite season.”
Now settled into married life, Chris seems to be turning his attention toward the future. In a previous interview with People magazine, he expressed his strong desire to start a family. “That’s absolutely something I want. Wife, kids, building a family,” he said.
He continued, “When you read about most of the best artists… it wasn’t the work they made that they were most proud of, it was about the relationships, the families they created, the love they found, the love they shared. Those things are the most important.”
Evans clearly values love, tradition, and long-term connection, and while his Portuguese might not have been perfect, his heart was exactly where it needed to be.
