Christina Applegate Says Living with MS Is Absolute Hell

Christina Applegate didn’t sugarcoat anything when she opened up about her battle with multiple sclerosis.

On a recent episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, the actress got brutally honest about just how much her life has changed since her 2021 diagnosis. She called MS the “worst thing” she’s ever been through, and honestly, her story is gut-wrenching.

These days, she rarely even leaves her house. Not because she wants to hide from the world, but because the symptoms are just too much. “If people saw what my life was like on the daily, they wouldn’t be able to do it,” she admitted. “Because I can sometimes not do it. It’s really, really hard.” That kind of pain and exhaustion isn’t something most of us can even imagine.

Christina described how MS has left her with extreme numbness and searing pain at the same time. “I was losing balance, but the pain was extraordinary,” she said. “And when I say numb, it’s numb, but it hurts.” That contrast is one of the many messed-up things about the disease, your body doesn’t work, and it hurts in ways you can’t even explain.

On the Messy podcast, she got even more real. She said she sometimes just lies in bed screaming from the pain. And it’s not just one part of her body, it’s spreading. Now, her hands are affected too. She struggles to even pick up her phone or the TV remote. Opening bottles? Forget about it. That kind of daily struggle wears you down fast.

She even joked, darkly, that some mornings are so rough, she feels like just peeing in her diaper because walking to the bathroom hurts too much. “I actually don’t lie here and pee in my bed diaper. That’s just a joke,” she said, trying to keep some humor in the darkest corners of her reality. But behind the joke is the truth, MS has completely reshaped her life.

From losing mobility to constant pain and not being able to perform simple tasks, Christina’s experience is a raw look at what it’s like living with a brutal, invisible disease. She’s not out here asking for sympathy, but by sharing what she’s going through, she’s shining a much-needed spotlight on just how devastating MS can be.
