Dakota Johnson Says She Wasn’t to Blame for “Madame Web” Flop

Dakota Johnson is setting the record straight about Madame Web and its disappointing performance.

The 35-year-old actress, who starred in the 2024 Sony-Marvel film alongside Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor, isn’t taking the fall for the movie’s critical and box-office failure. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Johnson made it clear: “It wasn’t my fault.”

She explained how the creative direction of the film shifted out of her control. “There’s this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body,” she said. “It started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point.”

Johnson didn’t seem too shaken by the outcome, saying she’s experienced flops before, both big and small. “I don’t have a Band-Aid over it. There’s no part of me that’s like, ‘Oh, I’ll never do that again’ to anything,” she added. “Who cares?”

But even though she’s brushing it off now, Johnson has been vocal about her discomfort during the making of Madame Web. In an earlier 2024 interview with Bustle, she reflected on how studio involvement and “decision by committee” ruined what could’ve been a solid film.

“Art does not do well when it’s made by committee,” she said. “Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.” Johnson stressed that audiences can spot insincerity. “Audiences will always be able to sniff out bull***,”* she said bluntly.

She also revealed she’s not likely to ever take on another superhero role again. “I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now,” Johnson admitted.

While she didn’t enjoy the intense backlash from fans and critics, Johnson now views the experience as part of the learning curve. “Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing,” she said. “It’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”

Ultimately, Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web experience is a cautionary tale about creative control in blockbuster filmmaking. While she won’t carry the blame, she’s taken away some hard lessons-and probably won’t be wearing a cape again anytime soon.
