Darren Criss Says Broadway Feels Easier Than Parenting Two Toddlers

Darren Criss is getting real about life as a dad , and honestly, he says being on Broadway is a lot less chaotic than raising two toddlers.

The former ‘Glee’ star, now 38, is juggling life with daughter Bluesy Bell, who just turned three, and 10-month-old son Brother László, both of whom he shares with wife Mia Swier.

Talking to Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors,’ Darren admitted that starring in Maybe Happy Ending eight times a week feels way more controlled compared to wrangling two little ones at home. “I have two kids under three. If I’m putting the jokes aside, it’s the most beautiful arrangement because to have a schedule and be with my children all day is nice,” he shared. But he didn’t hold back about which job is tougher, adding, “I have to say, the show is the easiest part of my day as a parent with two under three.” He even joked that after a day of chasing toddlers, performing in a two-hour show feels “sweet and measured,” especially compared to the “ballistic and uncontrolled” energy of little kids.

Darren’s not complaining, though. He’s talked before about how he actually thrives in the middle of the madness. He told People it’s been a “blessing” to have his personal and professional life booming at the same time, saying, “Chaos begets chaos. And I, for better or worse, tend to thrive on a bit of chaos.” Honestly, it sounds like he’s managing it all with the kind of rockstar energy we’d expect from him.

Even with all his experience, Darren admits he still gets nervous before every performance. Speaking to Us Weekly, he said, “I think someone told me once that being nervous means you care. So that’s always good.” He added that a lot of performers set crazy high standards for themselves during shows, but in the end, even hitting about 75% of their goals still feels like 100% magic to the audience.

At the end of the day, whether he’s handling stage lights or late-night diaper changes, Darren Criss seems to be balancing it all like a pro, chaos, nerves, toddlers, and all.
