Elizabeth Reaser isn’t sugarcoating it, she straight-up thinks film sets are some of the worst places to be.
The Twilight star recently opened up about her experience in the industry, calling film sets “the most toxic, worst places” she’s ever worked. At 49, she’s already not looking forward to sticking around until old age like her White Lotus co-star Lois Smith, who’s still acting strong at 94.
Talking to Metro’s 60 Seconds column, Reaser praised Smith for being “unbelievable” and full of energy, but when asked if she wants to act at that age, her answer was a hard no. “God, I hope not,” she said. “There’s other work I’d like to still do, I’m also a writer, but I think film sets are just the most toxic, worst places.”
She didn’t get into specifics about which projects she’s talking about, but she made it clear there’s a pattern. “It’s so insane. There’s a lot of bad behavior. A lot of people yell and are aggressive on sets and get away with it. Then there are people who are unprepared, and there are people who are just mean. That’s all pretty common, and it’s humiliating.”
In one example that clearly stuck with her, Elizabeth described witnessing abuse during an actual shoot. “I worked on something recently where a young girl was being very much abused, right in front of everyone, while we were rolling.”
She also said that people getting injured on set isn’t rare, and what’s worse, nobody seems to care. “It’s bad, you know?” she added. And when you do find a safe, professional environment, you realize how rare that is.
Elizabeth did name-drop a couple of those rare good experiences. “Jason Reitman runs a very good set,” she said of her Young Adult director. “And The Family Stone, that was a great set. I love that movie, and I love the people in it.”
As for taking keepsakes from her films? She’s not sentimental about that either. “Not on purpose!” she laughed. “I might run off with a pair of socks or something. But once I’m done with a shoot, it’s like I never want to think about it ever again.”
So yeah, Elizabeth Reaser is over the glamorized version of Hollywood. Behind the scenes? Not so pretty.
