Elon Musk’s Trump Apology Stirs Even More Drama

Elon Musk might be trying to smooth things over with Donald Trump, but it looks like the damage is already done.

According to exclusive sources, the Elon Musk-Trump feud is now locked in “pure avoidance” mode, and no amount of late-night X apologies can fix what’s broken.

Once allies with an oddly transactional dynamic, Musk and Trump have now fully drifted apart. It all spiraled after Musk’s explosive rant on X in early June, where he tore into Trump, slammed his “Big, Beautiful Bill” as a “disgusting abomination,” and even accused the former president of covering up Epstein files, a claim he deleted soon after. But the screenshots? Still out there.

One political insider spilled to PEOPLE that what was once a strategic friendship has “evolved from love to transactional to now pure avoidance.” And the biggest red flag? Trump’s memory. “Trump doesn’t forget,” the source said. “He may say something polite in public, but after what Elon wrote, their relationship will never again be the same.”

Another insider close to Trump made it even clearer: “He’s so far from good terms with Trump. Nobody trusts you again after you go that nuclear.”

Let’s rewind. On May 30, Musk was still playing the role of White House insider, wrapping up his short 130-day contract as a “special government employee” and heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). During their final Oval Office press appearance, Trump praised Musk and said he hoped he’d stay connected with the administration.

Then Musk stepped outside and hit post. The following week, he launched into that now-infamous tirade that torched his connection with Trump. Just days later, on June 5, Trump said he was “very disappointed” and that their once-great relationship was probably over.

By June 11, Musk seemed to regret the chaos. In a 3 a.m. post, he admitted that some of his comments “went too far,” adding that he’d started to regret how he handled things. But it was already too late. Even when Trump called the pseudo-apology “very nice” in a chat with the New York Post, his tone during a June 12 press conference said otherwise.

While signing a resolution aimed at blocking California’s EV mandate, Trump brought up Musk’s loyalty, or lack of it. He said he was always surprised Musk supported him, considering the policy issues surrounding Tesla. “I used to say, ‘I’m amazed that he’s endorsing me because that can’t be good for him,’” Trump said. “He got a little bit strange, but I don’t know why, over much smaller things than that.”

It’s not just about personal drama either. Musk has been vocal about his policy beefs with the administration, especially over government spending. He’s blasted the bill Trump loves as being a budget-breaking mess that undoes all the progress he tried to make through DOGE. “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both,” Musk told CBS Sunday Morning.

Now, the Elon Musk-Trump feud seems to be one of those political breakups that’s not just messy, it’s permanent. Trump may laugh it off in public, but behind closed doors, insiders say he’s done. And Musk’s midnight apologies? Probably too little, way too late.
