Gwyneth Paltrow is proving that breakups don’t always mean break-offs, especially when it comes to friendships.
The Oscar winner and Goop founder reportedly has no plans to cut ties with Dakota Johnson, even after Johnson’s recent split from Paltrow’s ex-husband, Chris Martin. According to a source close to the situation, Paltrow and Johnson “developed a close friendship” over the years and Gwyneth “fully intends on maintaining that bond,” breakup or not.
Paltrow, 52, and Johnson, 35, have shared a surprisingly sweet connection despite their unusual relationship triangle. What started off as a polite, blended-family dynamic while Johnson was dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has reportedly evolved into something way deeper. The insider adds, “There’s a genuine mutual respect between Gwyneth and Dakota, and they have a lot in common. They both grew up in the spotlight, have been in the business for years, and really relate to each other’s experiences.” Basically, Hollywood royalty just vibes with other Hollywood royalty.
News of Dakota and Chris’s split broke on June 4, ending their almost eight-year, on-and-off relationship that began in 2017. Despite their quiet nature, the couple had remained one of the more low-key but long-standing celeb pairs, even stepping out together publicly just weeks ago in Malibu on May 16. They were also seen holding hands back in January while in India during Coldplay’s tour. For years, they dodged engagement rumors that began around 2020, with a source telling PEOPLE in early 2024 that they had been engaged “for years” but were “in no rush to get married.”
As for Paltrow and Martin, their history is just as famous. The two “consciously uncoupled” in 2014 after over a decade of marriage and share two children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19. Their split made headlines not just for their celebrity status but also for the calm, spiritual way they approached divorce. And now, Gwyneth is showing she’s not just cool with her ex’s ex, she actually considers her family.
A photo from November 2023 showed Gwyneth and Dakota holding hands and smiling outdoors, and in October of the same year, Paltrow opened up in a Q&A on Instagram Stories, gushing about Dakota: “We’re actually very good friends. I love her so much,” she said, calling her “an adorable, wonderful person.” No drama, just mutual love.
Dakota, for her part, has also spoken highly of the relationship she built with Paltrow and Martin’s kids. In an interview with Bustle back in March 2024, she said, “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.” That kind of bond doesn’t just disappear because a relationship ends.
With Paltrow’s public support and Dakota’s clear affection for the family, it seems like this friendship is here to stay. And honestly? We’re here for it. In a world full of post-breakup awkwardness, Gwyneth and Dakota are flipping the script, and proving that when it comes to modern families, love can evolve in the most unexpected (and healthy) ways.
